Chapter 15

He looked upon her gravestone. Stroking his hand across it, he read her name aloud and set the flower softly down onto the ground.

Satine, he said as he sat next to the earthen mound, looking onto her gravestone covered with countless now dead flowers.

I miss you, he said again, a sob coming from him.

I mean, look, look what Ive done to myself, he said pointing at the bloody bandages. Im confused and scared, II dunno what to do anymore, could you please help me?

He sat there silently hoping for an answer, but only a draft of wind blew across the plane.

What am I doing expecting an answer? Christian said his voice more angry. I he said not knowing how to blurt out another sentence. Another gust of wind, his hat flew off.

Oh that wind, he said exasperated.

He chased his hat down. When he grabbed it off the road, and looked up, to his surprise he was standing in front of Pierres Edition.

Bridgette, he said with wonder.
Bridgette sat in front of a mirror, finishing dressing herself for the day. The rising sun was stuck behind a mist of gray, and it reflected Bridgettes thoughts. Her mind never waded off Christian, and as badly as she wanted him, she told herself to forget it, that there was no longer a chance. She had gone on her lust and ruined what small, insignificant thing they had, and that was that.

The sound of a pebble knocked into the window. Bridgette looked up in confusion. Another. She walked over to the window to see Christian standing in the road. The first thing she noticed was the bloody bandages wrapped around his face. She wouldve immediately inquired, but with Christian she knew things came better with time. She opened the window.

Christian? she said surprised.

Can, I, I mean we, you wanna go for a walk?
She thought of her father.

Just a moment, she answered. She walked in and picked the book of his desk and hid it in her purse. She then lied to her father saying she was going off down the street to the library, and with that joined him on the road. He held his arm out in gentleman fashion, and with that they uneasily retreated down into the fog.

Chapter 16

The two walked in utter silence. Christian was too confused to know what to say, and Bridgette didnt want to say anything that would hurt him. Christian aimlessly turned into the walkway in front of the Moulin Rouge, and Bridgette stopped.

Would you like to go in? he asked nervously. A raindrop landed on Bridgettes head.

Okay, just for a little while, she answered.

They walked in, and she could tell the significant effect the place had on Christian, she could feel his arm tighten, and his face fighting back the feeling to show sorrow.

I need to talk, Christian suddenly blurted out.

I will listen, go ahead and tell me,
Not here, he said walking her out towards the elephant.

When they were up in it, they sat on by the gigantic heart shaped window and looked out.

I hurt Bridgette,

Bridgette felt tears well in her eyes.
I know you do,
I... he struggled. I just cant live anymore, and look what Ive done to myself. He pulled the bandages down showing scabbed scrapes, Bridgette brought her hand up and softly ran her finger down them. Every moment I ache and I no longer have the answers. People are like get over it, and I constantly wonder if somethings wrong me. There is no purpose in living, the words tumbled out, and Bridgette gave him her full attention.

Christian theres every reason to live.

Christian looked downward to the floor, not believing a word she said.

Give me one reason, he replied.

Bridgette felt the answer she so desperately wanted to say, and she struggled to gain the courage.
Forme, she bashfully said.

He looked at her with content in his eyes and did not answer. Then Christian lied down onto his back, and Bridgette cautiously crawled up on top of him, her hands grasping him, and she loved the warmness of his body. Their faces locked upon one another, and Bridgette smiled innocently.

A smile, awkward for him, spread across his face. He then sighed and closed his eyes. Bridgette lowered her head down onto his chest, letting the melody of his heartbeat and breathing lull her to sleep.

She wanted to lie their forever by him. By a man she loved more than anyone would know. By a man she cared for so dearly, that it nearly suffocated her when she wasnt by him. The rain continued to drizzle. A fear, that was ever growing came into her mind. The question was short, but its meaning more powerful than anything else. The thought quietly intertwined into her dreams, a shadow in the gold and sunshine. Could he ever love her back? If so, would the ever-lurking shadow of Satine haunt them? In that moment she envied Satine, feeling bad for being jealous of a dead person, but wanted the love and happiness he had given her. Could Christian ever give Bridgette that?
