Qualities of the Numbers
For the beginning student of numerology, only thirteen numbers are of primary significance. All other numbers are reduced to one of these simple numbers. 1 through 9 and what are called the master numbers: 11,22,33, and 44 Keep in mind that the descriptions of the qualities of the numbers I have given here are merely brief overall interpretations.
1. The key word here is WILL. A number 1 person will be an innovator who is unique and forceful, with strong focus. She will be a pioneer who is willing to set out alone for uncharted territory, looking for new beginnings and new ways of being independent and individualistic. She is a good leader who can inspire trust and loyalty while making rapid decisions that are well based on logic. At her worst, the number 1 can be pushy, narrow-minded, and self-absorbed. She may behave with an air of superiority and have a tendency to isolate herself.
2. The key word here is COOPERATION. A number 2 person will be the reasoning force in any situation. She is the one who will see both sides of an argument and will be able to explain the situation calmly to overheated parties. She will be group-oriented, a person who looks for and enjoys partnerships, who relishes working out things with people. She may be a counselor of some type, or she might display some amount of acting agility. At her worst, the number 2 can be duplicitous, shy, self-conscious, and reclusive. She might avoid groups or relationships of all kind or be tense when forced to deal with them.
3. The key word here is JOY. The number 3 person has fun and wants others to have fun, too. She enjoys life and lets all the bad roll off her back. This person is dynamic, imaginative, and lucky- perhaps the most well-rounded personality of them all. At her worst, the number 3 can be all talk and no action. Or the balance of this fun sign can be off kilter so as to make the individual overly introverted or overly extroverted.
4. The key word here is FOUNDATION. The number 4 person is hardworking, dedicated, sometimes overly serious. She needs stability so desperately that nothing else matters as much. Her goal is solidity ant any cost. The powers of concentration here are enhanced, and creative in a very down-to-earth way. This person is goal-oriented in that she prefers a job that has a beginning, a middle, and an end, rather than work that is more or less ongoing. At her worst, this person is dour, fixed, inflexible, and very slow to change. There is a tendency to box oneself in by setting too many limits, or by having too many limits imposed.
5. The key words here are EMOTIONAL PROGRESS. The number 5 person is an independent traveler who loves her freedom. The number 5 will likely be sexually attractive, loving, and able to express anger in a healthy way. This person has self-doubts and fears but is successfully striving to conquer them - and she will. She is a good decision-maker who is interested in growth and almost constantly on the move. This person learn through hands-on experience rather than through study or logic. At her worst, the number 5 can be indecisive, overly self-indulgent, hot-tempered, dissatisfied, and generally, no fun at all to be around.
9. The key word here is IDEALISM. The number 9 person is a born teacher, guru, or leader of some kind. She is concerned with humanitarian causes, is compassionate and loving. Many leaders in the arts and sciences are number 9s and frequently dramatic ability is considerable. These people seem to have the qualities of a sage; they understand the oneness of all, the larger perspective. In fact, they need to understand the big picture in order to do their small part. At her worst, the number 9 is too sentimental, never knowing when to let go. She may be moody or depressed, may live too much in the past, and may be careless with her finances. This is the person who changes direction at the very brink of success - almost as though she needs to fail, or at least, fail to succeed.
6. The key words here are HUMANITARIAN SERVICE. The number 6 person may be an artist or may perform her work with a certain type of artistry. The home is important to a number 6, since this personality is a nurturing one that likes to focus on family and career. She is unselfish, at home with herself, and relationship-oriented. She finds it easy to empathize and desires to balance the problem of people and the world. She strives to make her dreams real and to learn about the creative process. At her worst, the number 6 can get stuck in a home or career that is not to her liking, or she may spend all of her energy on others, to the exclusion of her own needs. Behavior can be obstinate because her belief systems are fixed.
7. The key word here is STUDY. The number 7 person is very cerebral, both intellectually and intuitively. She is very interested in introspection, meditation, and the search for perfection. This is the soul who needs to get away from society, to get back to nature, to think in the forest or on a mountaintop. Number 7s need to specialize in something in order to succeed financially. They need to know everything there is about a subject, and they will drive themselves unmercifully to attain that goal and be the best. At her worst, the number 7 can be secretive, gossipy, overly analytical, or cynical. Their desire to be the best can get the best of them, causing low energy and sometimes even illness, the function of which is to slow them down so that they can listen to their wisdom. This is the person who thinks she can accomplish superhuman tasks in a single day. Seven is the number of safety and of occult intelligence in the Kabala. The person whose number is 7 must regularly get in touch with her needs and listen to the inner self.
8. The key words here are ETHICAL LEADERSHIP. The number 8 person will be responsible, powerful, and an excellent leader and/or teacher. She might preside over a company or corporation, where her strength and leadership can be noticed and rewarded. Finances are important to the number 8, as is authority. The number 8 needs close personal ties in her family life and strong professional bonds at work. At her worst, the number 8 can be overly demanding and boisterous - a person who loves to toot her own horn. She may be irresponsible, may steal or cheat or in some way repress others. She will want the job done her way or not at all.
The Master Numbers (11, 22, 33, or 44) are important and providential. The Master numbers have an additional strength and meaning. They heighten the effect of their base number. i.e.11 heightens the qualities of the base number 2. This heightening is not necessarily positive or negative; it is simply enhancement. Both numbers are significant; dont get overly involved in the master number to the exclusion of the base number to which it reduces. Many numerologists assign special meanings to these master numbers; if your name or birth date adds up to a master number, you might want to pursue it; take a look at whole chapters of discussion and interpretation in books such as Your Days Are Numbered by Florence Campbell. If you continue your study of numerology, you should try to determine their meanings for yourself. Bernard Gittelson
