No magick is generally performed during this period of time. The moon is not visible in the sky. This is a time of rest and recuperation, of meditation, and of vision questing. From ten-and-a-half to fourteen days after the full moon. The dark moon is a time for dealing with attackers, for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our angers and passions. Also bringing justice to bear. MOON PHASES - NEW MOON The first quarter phase of the moon begins when the moon and the sun are together in the sky, or conjunct to one another. It is at the very beginning of this phase that the moon is invisible, hidden by the brightness of the sun. This is usually what is referred to as the Dark Moon (more on that later) because it cannot be seen. The New Moon (crescent moon) is 0-45 degrees directly ahead of the sun. The moon rises at dawn and sets at sunset. New Moon energies represent beginnings. This is a time to start new projects, plant the seeds for future projects. Sun and moon energies are combined in this phase to give great strength to new projects. According to Silver RavenWolf, legend has it that in this phase, Diana, disguised as a cat, coerced her brother Lucifer into her bed of passions. The Queen of Witches, Aradia, is the result of this unusual union. As the new moon signifies the conception of Aradia, she is always a willing participant in the magick of her children. The New Moon phase is a time to give thanks for workings (both long- and short-term) that have been successful. Any banishments done at the full and waning moons should have manifested by now. Offerings of milk and honey, or water laced with fertilizer for the plants outside (during the growing season), is appropriate. If in the season of sleep (winter), then set out food for the small animals. Some other Goddesses which can be employed during this phase are Diana, Artemis, Astarte, Ana. Sun Goddesses such as Sekhmet, Vesta, and Heartha can also be aspected with great success. (A note on calling specific deities: Do your homework and know who/what you're invoking!) This is also a good time for dragon magick, or rituals where the God and Goddess are balanced. Rituals focusing on the God are, of course and as always, acceptable in this (or any) phase. For the best use of this energy, magick should be performed between dawn and sunset according to some. Others say to begin just as the first sliver of moon appears in the night sky. New Moon workings can be done from the day of the new moon to 3-1/2 days after. The closer you are to the new moon, the better your chances of success...so they say. Any work done on the New Moon should manifest by the Full Moon or the next New Moon. If it does not, repeat the working.....make sure you go over what you did before to check for any mistakes in timing or whatever. Other things to work for during the New Moon phase include beauty, health, and self-improvement; farms and gardens; job hunting; love and romance; networking. Meditation work should include work on bringing abundance into your life. Picture the harmony you desire, the current needs you have. Make a mind movie about how you want both short- and long-term goals to manifest (in other words, visualize in detail). In addition, concentrate on parts of yourself (body, mind, or spirit) that need regeneration. "The Moon Goddess has three aspects: As She waxes, She is the Maiden; full, She is the Mother; as She wanes, She is the Crone." -- Starhawk ("The Spiral Dance") The following meditation is from Starhawk's book, "The Spiral Dance." As always, arrange it to suit you if you want to use it and don't like the original. Waxing Moon Meditation Ground and center. Visualize a silver crescent moon, curving to the right. She is the power of beginning, of growth and generation. She is wild and untamed, like ideas and plans before they are tempered by reality. She is the blank page, the unplowed field. Feel your own hidden possibilities and latent potentials; your power to begin and grow. See her as a silver-haired girl running freely through the forest under the slim moon. She is Virgin, eternally unpenetrated, belonging to no one but herself. Call her name "Nimue!" and feel her power within you. |
