| FEATHER MAGIC |
| The magical qualities of feathers are determined by their color (and, sometimes, by the birds from which they fell.) Never harm a bird to obtain a feather. White - Purification, spirituality, hope, protection, peace, blessings of the moon. Green - Money, fertility, growth. Brown - Health, stability, grounding, the home. Orange - Attraction, energy, success. Yellow - Intelligence, blessings of the Sun. Red - Courage, good fortune, life. Pink - Love Gray - Peace, neutrality. Blue - Psychic awareness, peace, health. Black - Not recommended. Red and Brown - Healing animals. Brown and White - Happiness. Gray and White - Hope, balance. Black and White - Union, protection. Green and Red - Finances. Blue, White, and Black - Change. Black and Purple - Hope, balance. |
| Witches Ladder One of the most powerful charms that includes feathers is the Witches Ladder. This is a cord made of three lengths of colored yarn braided together, with different colored feathers knotted into the cord at regular intervals. Witches Ladders can be of two varieties - a general charm of protection and good fortune, or one for a specific purpose, such as the gaining of mystical knowledge, health, or prosperity. An all-purpose Witches Ladder would include nine feathers, each of a different color, and a cord of three colors braided together. Three appropriate colors are white, red, and black, which represent the three aspects of the Goddess. A Witches Ladder for a specific purpose would include three feathers and one length of yarn braided into the cord of a specific color. To make a Witches Ladder, gather together the necessary materials, preferably on the night of the Full Moon. Arrange an altar and cast a Circle. Take about a yard (three times the length of your arm from elbow to tip of little finger) of each color yarn, and tie the three ends together in a knot. Then begin braiding them together, chanting as you braid: Yarn of Red, Black, and White Work your magick spell this night. Repeat this chant over and over until the entire length of yarn has been braided. (Braiding itself is a magical act because it makes three strands into one, representing the three aspects of the Goddess in one.) When the braid is finished, tie a knot in the end. Then starting about a foot from the beginning of the braid, tie the first feather with a knot around its base, saying (for a green feather): With this feather and this string Prosperity this charm will bring. When all nine feathers have been tied into the cord as evenly spaced as possible, tie the ends of the cord together to form a circle. Then pass it through the candle flame and incense smoke, and asperge it with salt and water with words such as: In the names of the Goddesses And the God By Air, Earth, Fire, and Water I consecrate this charm Of feathers nine and cord of three As I will, so mote it be! Then hang the Witches Ladder high in your house, where it will not be seen by others who might be prejudiced toward it, but where you will see it every day.
