Simply put, and agreeing with the definition in most textbooks, evolution is change over time. On its broadest scale, it covers the beginning of the universe, the life of stars, the formation of planets, and eventually the formation of life. This life would then adapt and change according to its environment, which eventually would result in a larger change, and eventually the appearance of two or more completely separate species with a common ancestor.
