The first thing Kaye did was open her bag and pull out a crowbar. She put it inbetween the elevator doors and pushed them open. She grabbed her flashlight and looked inside. That's when she saw it. Up above the lift cables had been cut and were slowly unraveling. And they were barely there now. A few more minutes and everyone would plunge to their deaths. Kaye picked up her mobile and called Ritchie.
"Ritchie. I'm up above you guys. I don't want anyone to move at all. I'm going to climb down and help you guys out. But don't make any sudden movements. I'll see you in a little bit." Kaye hung up and looked around for somewhere to tie her rope. She found somewhere and attached it.
Kaye then hooked the rope around her and climbed down into the darkness. After about moving down 10 feet she reached the top of the lift. She shone her flashlight around till she found the top hatch. She lifted up the hatch and looked inside.
"Kaye!" Shawn squealed. Boy was she ever relieved to see her.
"Hey guys. We have to make this fast. Can you guys help Dot, Abbie and Shawn out first?" The boys obliged and lifted Abbie out first. Kaye was going to have her climb the rope back up but she then noticed the ladder along the wall. "Abbie. Climb that ladder up and find another flashlight in my bag. Shine it down here and give us more light."
Abbie more than willingly climbed up the ladder. Next out was Dot. Then Shawn. After Shawn was out another cord had broken and the lift was getting shakier by the second.
"Hurry guys. We don't have any time to waste." Kaye yelled at the boys. They had been fighting over who would go next but soon gave that up when the lift started shaking again. They lifted up Sean, then Scott, then Abs, then Ritchie. J was last because he had enough physical strength to pull himself up without any help. Well except for Kaye reaching down and helping him out.
J was on the ladder when the cables finally broke. Everyone screamed. Kaye was still on the lift when they broke. The lift plummeted to the ground and shattered.
"A little help here!" Kaye yelled. Everyone looked towards the center of the shaft. There hung Kaye looking very pale.
"Kaye give me your hand." J reached out for her and she grabbed onto him. The two climbed up the ladder together and up towards their friends. As soon as she was out of the shaft everyone started hugging Kaye.
"We thought you were a goner!" Dot cried tears streaming down her face. They really had. They didn't know that she was securely tied to the above floor.
"No. It's going to take more than that to kill me." Kaye tried to laugh it off. But she knew better. Cables don't just get cut for no reason. And Kaye had this feeling that her friends were supposed to be in that lift when it plummeted. But she didn't feel the need to tell them. Instead they walked down the stairs back to her flat.
