| Called the 'black album' by many (due to its monochrome cover), metallica marks the groups entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songers, simpler song structures and a slower tempo overall. That said, this is an amazing album, featuring some of the best song writing metallica has ever done. "enter sandman", "wherever i may roam" and "the god that failed", despite being slower and more groove orientated than the bands earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavy rhythms that have been a constant in all of metallicas music. The band gows introspective with "the unforgiven", and proves they can write a ballad with "nothing else matters", which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high energy album despite its laidback approach, and is in some ways superior to ...and justice for all, which was weakened by overly complicated songs and shoddy production. This is a must buy!! |
