Basil went to the vet today for his yearly exam and shots. The vet is very pleased with how he looks overall, especially his TPLO leg. I mentioned that the TPLO knee appears bigger than the other leg. She poked and proded and Basil just stood there. She thinks it's just scar tissue (which is good) but just to be safe, she would like to xray him the next time the orthovet (Dr. Edinger) is there. She just wants to make sure that there is no soft tissue injury or damage to the repair. She mentioned his muscles are almost even now. She also said that I should let Basil do "whatever he wants" because although he continues to limp, he shows no signs of pain or discomfort (and he's not a good actor). OMGosh! The thought of letting him run wild is almost too much to bear. I really don't want to go through this process again, especially not 2 months before I move. But, I do have to let him be a dog - afterall, that's why I went through the TPLO in the first place.
Basil is 16 weeks post and I do let him run free with the other dogs in the apartment "yard" but I hold my breath (or just don't look) the entire time. Will there ever come a time when I'm not worried? I took him to a nearby trail and let him off the leash. He did very well - no boxer burns but he did slip once - onto his good leg - UGH! Scared me to death. A slip is how he injured the leg in the first place.
Anyway, the vet says "Basil is in excellent physicial condition" so I couldn't ask for anything better! |
