How to Appreciate
Paintings > >
In looking at
works of art, it is important to realize that the
beauty of a picture does not depend only on its subject matter
but on its style and form. The important thing to look for
is the special way in which the artist has used formal elements,
such as line and color, in order to express his particular
point of view.
In looking at an abstract
or nonobjective painting, the viewer must try to understand
why an artist distorts or departs from reality, and to appreciate
the expressive qualities he thus achieves. The person who
does some painting himself can perhaps best achieve an understanding
of painting as a technical craft with certain problems and
difficulties. It may be discovered that to paint an abstract
work that it was imagined any child could do is not as easy
as it seems.*
