| This statue represents the devotion of the Army private. The soldiers struggled not to leave fallen members of their company behind. These men were being shot at and attacked from all sides, but never did their devotion come second. |

| This statue was inspired by one of the Hoback boys from Bedford, VA. The two eldest Hoback brothers were both killed during the Normandy invasion. One of the brothers that was lost was carrying his bible with him. Two days after his mother received notice of his death, she received his bible from a member of the army with a note that he had found the bible with her name in it on the beach two days after the invasion. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| This former D-Day veteran was passing out informational brochures on the D-Day Memorial. I cannot recall his name, but he and I had several of the same memories, even though our paths never crossed during World War II. Thirty-five men from Bedford were present during the Normandy Invasion. Nineteen died within the first fifteen minutes, two died later. He was one of six men from Bedford that survived the Normandy Invasion. The other five are alive and doing well considering their ailments. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
