Eugene J. Hamlett
November Trip To The
National D-Day Memorial
Page 2
The picture to the left is of me admiring the monument as a group of children from the neighboring school came to see it.  I couldn't help but to think that they were really too young to understand.  I hope that one day they will understand the impact that this war had on the thousands of men who served, and fought for their freedom.
The picture is of the monument. It stands 44 feet, 6 inches tall. D-Day was June 6, 1944, and the heigth represents, the 6th month, the 6th day, and the year 1944. Around the base of this monument, there are 5 brass walk plates which represent the 5 divisions of the invasion, they are Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.  The phrase Overlord was the code word for the entire operation. It is very remarkable and impressive to see it.  I can only imagine what it will represent when it is completed.
This picture is of me and my lovely wife, Betty Lou.  When you see the two of us in front of the 44 foot, 6 inch memorial, it really puts its' enormous size into perspective.  Betty Lou has always encouraged me to locate my fellow POW's.  I am very thankful to have such a wonderful, caring person in my life.
This is another picture of my wife and I in front of one of the flowerbeds at the monument.  Construction crews were all over working towards meeting their goal.  They plan to be complete with the entire memorial on June 6, 2001.
I plan to go to the Memorial in June next year and take more pictures of the monument.  I can't wait to see it complete, and I will be sure to update the pictures as soon as I can.
