'I cannot imagine how people can get so crazy about a game with 22 grown men chasing after a rubber ball. And with an idiot chasing after them trying to maintain some form of order.'
Soccer is simply a game where two teams of players try to kick a ball into the opposing goal. It is healthy, it builds stamina, it is not violent or dangerous, women can play too, and you can bet on the results. So what more do you want?
I also cannot explain why soccer is such a great game. Maybe it's the exhilaration you get when you score... But I still enjoy the game when I don't score. So I guess that's not it. Maybe it's the team factor, of playing with a bunch of good friends. I don't know. Sometimes, you simply enjoy doing something which you like, but end up forgeting why you enjoyed it in the first place. I suppose that's the best answer I can give.
Actually, the best thing about soccer is that it is very versatile and adaptable. Obviously it is very difficult to summon exactly two full teams of 22 players often for a match. But it really doesn't matter, for the game can be played as long as you have two teams. You don't even need an even number of players! You can play even if there are only two of you(yes, I've done it before)! All you need is a ball. Can't find goal-posts? Just improvise with chairs, shoes, bags or even trees. You don't have to put the ball between the posts. If you only have one post, try to hit it instead! No field? Well, a basketball court will do. And beach soccer is fun too. So as you can see, soccer is such an accessible game that you can play it anytime, anyplace.
I have a soccer team too. It's really my secondary school class, since almost the whole class was quite crazy about soccer(and there are 22 of us also!). We call ourselves FC4K. It stands for Football Club of 4K, because our class was called 4K. There's our emblem up there. Neat huh? I used to play goalkeeper after the regular one got injured. But I prefer playing defender or midfielder where you can at least move upfield more often. We even have a home ground called Bishan 'Stadium'. But it's actually just a vacant field surrounded by carparks near RI in Bishan. We have been playing there since secondary school, and still do so now and then. Some time back, someone stuck up a sign saying 'State Land. No Littering. No Dumping.', so I suppose soccer is still ok... Despite our various commitments, we still get together for soccer nowadays, but much less frequently and with less people. So we usually play at hard-courts, which isn't as fun but, what the heck, soccer is soccer, just let the good times roll!
