You can probably guess by now that I'm a really big fan of Faye Wong (I wonder why...). For the benefit of those of you who are unfamiliar with her (duh?), she is a very well-known and talented Chinese singer who has made it big in Hong Kong. She had won countless musical awards in Asia, notably not for her individual songs or albums, but usually for emerging as the Best Vocalist and Most Popular Artiste. Her
《棋子》 MTV had also won the 1995 MTV music award for Best Asian MTV. She had been nominated in the Best Actress category of the prestigious Golden Horse and Golden Screen Awards for her movie role in《重慶森林》(ChungKing Express)! She has been voted by GQ magazine as one of the 50 coolest women in the world in 1996 and even appeared on the May 1997 cover of Time magazine. The list is neverending! Not only do I love her songs, I also admire her very much. Although I would consider myself a Fayenatic, I do not truly belong to her legion of die-hard supporters who chase her on cabs when she is in town and stockpile copies of her albums and posters(pity!).So why the mad following? Perhaps you might just as well be asking her millions of fans around the world. I don't know. I cannot speak for the others, but personally, I like her because of her songs and philosophy of life. To truly appreciate her music, one must actually listen to her songs regularly (hint, hint). She has a certain distinctive style of singing which makes her songs sound very unique. Her songs usually do not leave a deep impression initially, but instead builds on you and can become very addictive, She has only recently tried her hand at composing her own songs, and I must say she is doing quite well for someone with little musical background. She does not play instruments and entered the music scene late due to discouragement from her mother. And true to her style, her lyrics are often few or even totally absent, which some are afraid bring down the commercial value of her songs.
But the bigger reason why I really like her is due to her attitude to life and the things around her. For despite becoming a pop icon, she has remained simple at heart - her biggest wish is to lead a happy life. Unlike other artists, she does not bother to please reporters by granting interviews or even by being cooperative. Her answers are trademarked as monosyllabic responses. And when she does not feel like it, she may even shut out the media completely. For like any other person, she values her privacy a lot, and does not agree that being an artist gives tabloids the right to splash stories of her life.
So if you are interested in finding out more about Faye Wong, do check out the websites I listed under Links. I don't have a site for her because I definitely won't have the time to do or maintain it. Anyway, there are already a lot around and I probably won't be able to do one which is as nice as some of them. Singaporeans should try the Singapore Fayenatics Homepage which contains updated local news and lots of print and voice clips. Faye's Cyberlink, on the other hand, is a good starting point to look for other sites since it lists all Faye sites like homepages, galleries, songs etc.
