The European Parliament

After you have finished reading the information listed below, go back to Europe In Brief and read about another EU institution or click here and check your knowledge. Good luck!

Text Box:  The European Parliament is elected every 5 years by the adult citizens of the European Union.
The present parliament has 732 members (MEPs) from all 25 EU countries. The president of the European Parliament is Mr. J. Borrell. The main job of the European Parliament is to pass the European laws. It shares this responsibility with the Council of the European Union.
The proposals for new laws come from the European Commission.
If the Parliament doesn't like the proposal for a certain law it can ask the Commission to change it.
The main meetings of the European Parliament are held in Strasbourg or Brussels. Like all the other EU institutions, it works in all 20 official EU languages. The Parliament elects the European Ombudsman which investigates citizens’ complaints about maladministration by the EU institutions.
