Facts about Art

Monday 7th of March
In the following I'll place facts about anything to do with Art. Obviously the choice of these facts will be strongly coloured by my own taste! But you can always e-mail me if you have a fact that should be placed on this page!

Fact: I
In the old Greece ‘Plato’ and ‘Aristoteles’ already thought about science and art. The meaning of Art known today, differs from the meaning back then. They used the word ‘technč’ for different skills like writing poems, making furniture, sculpting and making shoes. Plato (427-347) found that for art ‘knowledge’ as well ‘ability’ was needed. The artist has to have knowledge of what he wants to make, and be technically able to give form to this. Insight in proportion and measurement is of great importance, because the measure is the base of the ‘good’ and ‘beautiful’ form. The ideal form only exists as an idea. Everything what we see is an imperfect reflection of it, and art is a reflection of this imperfect reflection. You see Plato didn’t have a high opinion of art. His apprentice Aristoteles (384-322) stood less harsh oppositing art. He though that imitating didn’t only mean displaying the things as you see them, but that you could display the things with your mind’s eye. So that you could display things as you wanted. Aristoteles gave room to the personal input of the artist.
