When
I read an article about Jennifer Clement's "Medicine Bags," I was in sore
need of healing myself. Her idea resonated with me, and I designed
my own bag, starting with six Hamsa hands of protection. Between
them went six hearts. The space that resulted lent itself to a Shield-of-David,
which seemed appropriate so I added that. The design at the top was
supposed to resemble water, but as I worked it in brick stitch, it really
reminded me of a fortress wall.
Working
on this piece gave me a feeling of strength, and a determination to take
matters into my own hands and get the medical problem solved. It's also
a great example of the motto "excess is best"!
