Behind- The- Wheel
Behind- The- Wheel Lessons
When your student is ready to take the next step to Behind- The- Wheel lessons with us, please let us know. They must have a Permit before they are allowed to sign up for lessons. There are some things that we feel you should know as to how this process works.
We will complete with your student a total of 6 hours of Behind- The- Wheel lessons. That will complete the State required minimum for instruction by a licensed driving school. An additional 30 hours (10 hours of night driving) is to be completed by the student and family members or guardians. Again, we stress this is State minimums. Some students will do fine with this amount; others will need a much longer period of time.
We will prepare them not only for the road test, but make sure they get as many different driving situations in as possible. Our last lesson will also take them to the Minneapolis area to give them a taste of city driving. We will show them how to parallel park, complete the 90 degree back, safe driving skills, etc. It is very helpful that the student understand the basics of how to steer and maneuver a car around corners before lessons start. We encourage all of our students and their parents or guardians to go out driving as soon as they receive their permit. Get the feel for the road and how a car works. The 6 hours of lessons, simply, are not enough to show them how to drive, complete the road test, and show them safe driving skills. The involvement of the parents or guardians are an essential ingredient to the students ability to drive.
Wait List
During certain times of the year you may experience a waiting list to get the behind the wheel lessons started. The State of Minnesota, as well as Esse Driving Schools, recommends a period of practice driving between each lesson. We understand that a wait may be inconvenient, and we do strive to do our best to keep that time down and to be fair to all of our students. But, please remember the practice time between lessons is crucial to completing the minimum 36 hour State requirement. However your student must hold their permit, by law, for a minimum of 6 months. It is strongly recommended to space your lessons out evenly throughout your 6 month wait for best results. Please, plan accordingly to make sure your student will complete the lessons in the time frame they desire.
If a student is able to do lessons during regular schools hours, they may be able to get their lessons started and completed earlier. For example, some students home school, others get out early for a work program. Let us know if this is the case and we will do our best to complete your lessons as quickly as possible. We will do lessons during the school day for other circumstances. For example, if the students daytime schedule permits a two hour block of time. I.E. a study hall and a lunch period back-to-back. However, most schools in the area do not consider doing a Behind-The-Wheel lesson as an excusable reason to leave school.
If you have after school activities that limit your availability, please allow for some extra time to get the lessons done. We will do the best that we can to get the lessons done in a timely fashion, but remain fair to all of our students.
We also request that you contact us prior to scheduling a Driver's License Road Test with the State.
