The "(SPXXXX)" around a unit in the table below indicates a former SSW/DRGW painted units repainted into the SP speed lettering scheme.
The "?" indicates a unit inactive for at least 4 weeks before 06/01/02. This could be for a number or reasons including a unit leased or with track rights on another railroad off the UP road, a unit sold to another railroad, a unit held for maintenance, repair work, paint shop, etc. at a engine facility, a unit taken out of active service for wreck repairs, uncorrectable maintenance problems, or units stored on the dead track being used for parts or headed for the scrap yard (my least favorite units). I have put this "roster" together to the best of my ability. The total number of ESPEE units to follow is now offically under 600. These figures are very accurate but not guaranteed to be perfect. I would appreciate help in the form of corrections and UP renumbering updates sent ot my e-mail address at [email protected].

Well, since our last
update we have lost that big thing that has helped this current day SP Locomotive
Roster and that is the loss the UPRR Public Equipment Trace (PET) website. But
thanks to my connections I can still post an un-interactive roster list of what
SP, SSW and DRGW units are left. Here are some of the notable events over the
last 7 months (scine 06.01.02).
- The last SP SD45T-2 was retired - SP9311 - 07.15.02
- The last SP GP40P-2's lease expired - SP7600 - 07.10.02
- The second to last blue ex-Helm GP38-2 - SP4873 - renumbered 10.08.02
- Fourteen of the last SP SD40R's were retired leaving only one in active service - SP7328
- Thirty-one of the last SP/DRGW SD40T-2's were retired leaving only 15 in active service
But there are still some survivors out there pushing on in active service into the year 2003 including...
- The last SP B39-8E - SP8013
- The last SP C44-9W - SP8192
- The last SP B39-8E - SP7328 (as mentioned above)
- The last DRGW GP40 - SP3086
- The last blue ex-Helm GP38-2 - SP4864
- Ten of the last SP SW1500 "cruds"
- Two of the last DRGW SD50's
- Four of the last wide cab SP SD70M's
- and one of the last Roseville '99 "SP" repaint SD40T-2's - SP8261 (the last units to be painted into Scarlet/Gray)
