You can track units by clicking on a unit number listed below or by going to the offical Union Pacific Trace Site at:
Surprisingly, not much has changed since 2 months ago. A low total of 22 units were patched/repainted/retired which is not bad in comparison to UP's renumbering pace just last year. Lone B39-8 SP 8013 still survives but lone SP 8192 is somewhere on the CSX out east repaying owed UP miles. The last GP40P-2 7600 (ex-bicentennial 3197) has reached the end with the EMD lease expiring in July and is sitting in Little Rock, AR with thre rest of the "Power by the Mile" units. These include most of the SD40R's and many of the last snoot nose SD40T-2's. The last true SP SD45T-2 in the form of speed lettered 9311 looks like it has come to the end or it's 3 decade plus life in resting in Little Rock as well. AC4400's remain mostly unpatched/painted thanks to the slow renumbering of the SD60/SD60M's which take up their new UP renumber slot. SD40M-2's seem so busy out of W. Colton that UP can't afford to hold them in the shop and patch them. Two more SP SD70M's bit the dust in the month of May but have emerged as quite strikingly beautiful flag units. This update came a little early and I also have a "beta" version of the "ESPEE Patch Trace Site" in the works featuring all UP patch/repaint locos. There are many former ESPEE locos out there and figuring out the whole UP renumbering system has taken a lot of research but LOOK FOR THIS TRACE SITE WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.
The "(SPXXXX)" around a unit in the table below indicates a former SSW/DRGW painted units repainted into the SP speed lettering scheme.
The "?" indicates a unit inactive for at least 4 weeks before 06/01/02. This could be for a number or reasons including a unit leased or with track rights on another railroad off the UP road, a unit sold to another railroad, a unit held for maintenance, repair work, paint shop, etc. at a engine facility, a unit taken out of active service for wreck repairs, uncorrectable maintenance problems, or units stored on the dead track being used for parts or headed for the scrap yard (my least favorite units). I have put this "roster" together to the best of my ability. The total number of ESPEE units to follow is now offically under 700. These figures are not perfect and I would appreciate help incorrections and UP renumbering updates.
Thanks to UtahRails for their UP roster updates and extensive coverage of painting, patching and retiring over the last year.
I hope this helps both ESPEE modelers and railbuffs. Please send corrections and/or other patch / repaint / retirement news to my e-mail address below.
