The "(SPXXXX)" around a unit in the table below indicates a former SSW/DRGW painted units repainted into the SP speed lettering scheme.
I have put this "roster" together to the best of my ability. The total number of ESPEE units to follow is now offically under 600. These figures are very accurate but not guaranteed to be perfect. I would appreciate help in the form of corrections and UP renumbering updates sent ot my e-mail address at [email protected].

Well, here are some
of the notable events over the last 4 months (since 06.31.03).
- Somehow a thought-to-be-retired SD40T-2 is back in service - SP8293
- Reinstated SD40T-2 SP8566 (see last 03.31.03 roster update) has been "tagged" or grafittied on it's hood side with "SOUTHERN COMFORT" (probably another disgruntled UP employee!). Tis unpatched T-2 was also working with fellow unpatched T-2 SP8540 on the Mojave Local in July
- The last speed lettered MP15AC was renumbered - SP2733 - renumbered 02.22.03
- The 9 ex-Helm GP38-2's had their leases expire and were slated to be removed from service but instead were reinstated in July after brief storage
- The last active SD40R in service, SP7328, continues to work in S. California on Beaumont Pass helper and Cajon Pass assignments.
- Four of the last DRGW SD40T-2's were still working together out of Helper, UT including 5349, 5354, 5371 and 5390 but now the 5354 has strayed out to Los Angeles as of 07.31.03. The DRGW5401 was brought back to active service but is not with its DRGW T-2 sisters. As of 07.31.03 it was in Arizona.
All of those unique Espee survivors are still out there pushing on in active service including...
- The last SP B39-8E - SP8013
- The last SP C44-9W - SP8192
- The last SP B39-8E - SP7328 (as mentioned above)
- The last DRGW GP40 - SP3086
- The last blue ex-Helm GP38-2 - SP4864
- Nine of the last SP SW1500 "cruds"
- Two of the last DRGW SD50's
- Four of the last wide cab SP SD70M's
- and one of the last Roseville '99 "SP" repaint SD40T-2's - SP8261 (the last units to be painted into Scarlet/Gray)
