| INTRODUCTION THE INGEN INCIDENT In the August of 1989, an astonishing development of genetics was discovered. A technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA was found, and the find was made secret. International Genetic Technologies, Inc., of Palo Alto, the corporation that discovered the technique, set up a park on Isla Nublar, an island off the coast of Costa Rica. Creatures that were extinct eons ago were created and let to roam Jurassic Park, where people around the world could visit them for a price. Until something went wrong A disgruntled worker made a bug in the system that shut down the power in the park, allowing him to steal dinosaur embryos. The worker was being paid by another genetics company, the Biosyn Corporation of Cupertino, California. But the worker was killed by a dinosaur while trying to escape, leaving the bug in the system The power was turned back on a long time later, but still only a handful of people survived. Jurassic Park was bombed, killing most of the dinosaurs and buildings that stood there. But thirteen years later, in the year 2002, InGen went back to the island with the extra embryos they have been storing, and began to rebuild Jurassic Park, illegally. The United States and the Costa Rican government both thought InGen was just tearing down the remains of the facilities there, until the CIA got suspicious, and sent three of their agents down to the island for inspection. Only one came back alive PROLOGUE ISLA NUBLAR The rain fell in heavy sheets, blanketing the mountains and jungles of the island of Isla Nublar, off the western coast of Costa Rica. Isla Nublar was eight miles long, and shaped as an inverted raindrop, bulging at the north end and coming down into a point at the south end. The island was covered in mountains, jungles, rivers, grassy plains, and hills. In the northern half, in the middle of one of the jungles, three hunters moved silently though the foliage, stalking their prey. The man in the lead was Ricky McCarthy, an experienced hunter that lived in the United States, before he got a job as Jurassic Parks park warden. McCarthy was a big man with broad shoulders. He moved through the jungle with a shotgun, fitted with a taser attached to the front. The two men behind him were both hunters, like McCarthy, but less experienced. Their names were Ron Coors and Josh Veener. All three men moved through the jungle in a half crouch, until McCarthy stopped. He looked through the green plants until he found what he was looking for a velociraptor. The first thing he saw was its head two feet long with two dark, staring eyes. It had a pointed snout and a long row of pointed teeth that ran from the end of the snout to a small hole used as an ear. The skin was leathery, like a crocodile, and was a dark brown-green color. The eyes did not blink, and the head did not move. It just stayed there motionless, staring coldly at McCarthy. Josh Veener leaned close and whispered into McCarthys ear, What is it? McCarthy replied, Its a velocira- The attack came suddenly, from the left and right. Two more raptors pounced into the air from their hiding places on the sides of the group. McCarthy saw an impression of powerful, six-foot-tall bodies, stiff balancing tails, limbs with curving claws, and opened jaws of jagged teeth. The raptors extended their hind legs, exposing their big six-inch-long dagger-like claws. The raptor on the left landed right on top of Coors, slashing his belly with its big claw, spilling his intestines out onto the ground. The other raptor landed in front of Veener. Veener stumbled backwards, and tripped on a root, sending him to the ground. The raptor took a step forward, and began to lower its jaw for the kill. But a blast from McCarthys shotgun blew a gaping hole in the torso of the raptor. The raptor screamed, and fell to the ground beside Veener, squirming in pain. McCarthy then turned towards the other raptor, which was crouching next to Coors, ripping chunks of flesh from his chest. McCarthy ran forwards and jabbed the taser into the raptor. Sparks flew, and the animal screamed in surprise. It stumbled back and ran into the jungle, smoke sizzling from its wound. McCarthy then remembered the first raptor. He spun around, only to see the raptor already in the air. He tried to dive out of the way, but was too late. The raptor came down hard on him, making him loose his balance, and knocking the shotgun out of his hands. The raptor landed on top of him as he fell, and did a roll off to the right. McCarthy got up and began to run, but the raptor head butted him, knocking him down again. He turned around, and saw that it was about to tear him with its big claw, but stopped. There was a zapping sound, and sparks and smoke billowed from its side. The raptor fell to the ground in pain. Next to the raptor was Veener, holding a shotgun, the taser smoking. Veener kicked the wounded dinosaur, then turned towards McCarthy, smiling. He started to say something, but McCarthy wasnt listening he was looking at the raptor, which got up and was now standing behind Veener. Veener heard a growl, and spun around just to see the raptor with his front claw outstretched. The raptor swiped his claw across Veeners face, making three bloody scratches. Veener fell to the ground and covered his face with his hands, screaming. The raptor then kicked his body with his big claw on his foot, slicing his torso open. Veener stopped screaming and lay motionless. It then turned to McCarthy McCarthy quickly scooped up a shotgun, turned around, and dug the taser into the pursuing raptors neck. Sparks and smoke flew from the wound, and it finally collapsed, motionless and unconscious. McCarthy reached into his back pocket and pulled out his radio and pressed the button. McCarthy to control, over? After a bit of static, a voice filled the radio. Control to McCarthy, we read you. I have one raptor unconscious Very good. But Coors and Veener are dead. There was a long pause. Jesus, the voice over the radio said, Okay, well pick up the raptor and the bodies. Or whats left of them anyway. Copy that, McCarthy replied Over and out. McCarthy turned the radio off, sat down on a log, and watched the velociraptor as he waited for them to come |
