Born, Andrew Warhola in Forest City Pennsylvania, anywhere from 1927-1930, his parents were Czechoslokovakian immigrants. Andys father was a construction worker and died in an accident when Andy was just 13. Andy was a very shy and a quiet child; he also had a life threatening disease known as St. Vituss Disease. Warhol said one time it was his first nervous breakdown. Andy showed an early talent in painting and drawing. He was so talented his fellow Art Club students tried ton kick him out.
Andy Warhol earned a high school education. He enrolled in Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Carnegie Mellon University.) Warhol graduated in 1949 and went to New York where he worked as an illustrator for magazines like Vogue, Harpers Bizarre, and Glamour. He did Shoe illustrations for I. Miller Shoes in the fifties. He soon became one of New Yorks most sought of and successful commercial illustrators.
In 1952 Andy Warhol had his first one-man exhibition, at the Hugo Gallery in New York and colored his hair straw blond (later replaced by blond and silver wigs). In 1956 he had and important exhibition at the well-known Museum of Modern Art. He first painted with oil paints on canvas, later he was famous for silk-screening. Andy and his mother lived together on Lexington Avenue. He painted many pieces of cats, which he adored and his mother had many of them.
In 1962 Andy created The Factory. It was located at 231 East 47th Street in Manhattan. The factory was the place were his pieces were mass produced. The factory was moved to 33 Union Square West at the end of 1967. At The Factory many drug filled parties were held here. Many famous people and artists attended these drug filled parties (Salvador Dali, Jack Kerouac, Jane Fonda, Judy Garland, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, and etc).
Warhol created some of his most known pieces in the sixties. This was the decade where he was the most productive. Some of his most famous works in the sixties were Coca-Cola Bottles, Golden Marilyn (Marilyn Monroe), Brillo Pad boxes, and 200 Campbells Soup Cans. Andy was obsessed with Jackie Kennedy; he did several different pieces of her. He produced the first record for the band Velvet Underground. He also designed their album cover (a giant banana) and he did many films with them.
In 1968 Valerie Salonis Shot Andy 3 times point-blank. Solanis worked for Andy off-and-on. She wanted him to produce her play S.C.U.M. He kept putting it off and ignoring her. After her arrest she stated, He had too much control over my life. Valerie Salonis was a homeless prostitute. She was a very angry person who needed mental help. She actually was very creative, she was a struggling artist.
By the 1970s he was a international star. He began publishing Interview magazine. Interview is still published today! Interview is and entertainment magazine. It includes some of the most fascinating and funniest people who are shaping pop-culture today. Andy began to paint again (like he did in the 50s and early 60s). Some of his most famous works in the 70s are Cow, Mao, American Indian, Flowers, Geothe, and Friedrich der Grosse. Warhol even started a very popular night club. In 1975 he published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol. In this book he describes what art is. Making money is art, and working is art and good business is the best art. He was one of those artists that looked at every day things and called it art.
In 1982 he expanded to T.V. with Andy Warhols T.V. and 1986 he created Andy Warhols Fifteen Minutes. These shows were aired on Mtv. He did a series of myth paintings; Mickey Mouse and Superman. He also started doing advertisements again, like Lifesavers. Warhol had many other famous works in the 80s, Broklyn bridge, Diamond dust Shoes, Daisy, Guns, and Endangered Species. In Andys last years he promoted artists such as Keith Haring and Robert Mapplethorpe.
Warhol died February 22, 1987 from complications after a simple gall bladder surgery. It has been said Andy was not well taken care of by the doctors. He died just two hours after the surgery in his house. More than 2,000 people attended the memorial mass at St. Patricks Cathedral. IN 1988 Hamburger Kunsterein showed his death photos. Warhols estate was auctioned off and his will provided for an endowment fund for the patronage of art. In seven years later in May of 1994 the Andy Warhol Museum opened in his hometown in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. It houses many of his greatest productions that number over 4,000 combined works of paintings, drawings, films, and prints.
Andy Warhol is the best artist in the world! He has influenced so many people, including me. Andy Warhol has earned the name the Prince of Pop. He dazzled with his innovative influence not only on modern art, but also on film, music, fashion, and even the idea of celebrity.
