Going South (working title)

Background

Here is some background on this title.  The player would play as a duck. As a duck, the player would then have to migrate south for the winter, but it's not as easy as it would appear.  There are many obstacles to deal with.  The player will have to deal with hunters, airplanes and the weather.  Along with that, the player will also have to make sure the duck gets enough food and water.

Development Information

At this point of time, I am looking at using Game Maker 4.2a for all the programming.  I want to use this for two reasons.  One is that I'm not all that up to speed on DirectX or OpenGL.  I have not really learned either one yet.  Using Game Maker will cut down on the time to make the game.  The second reason is related to the first as I want to spend more time on the design of the game and not on learning how to use the SDK.  That's software development kit to all you not in the know. So this game will only be for Windows as Game Maker only comes in the Windows flavour right now.

As for graphics, I haven't decided how to handle that yet.  I am not the best in the world at making artsy stuff so anything I do will probably turn out for the worse.  My initial style that I was going for was hand drawn color penciled backgrounds and sprites all on a notebook background, making it look like it was done on a sheet of paper.  I have since thought I should create 3D objects and just take 2D images from that.  However I am using Milkshape 3D and some things are difficult to do correctly, in my opinion.  It doesn't help that I am also a novice at creating 3D objects.

Sound is not so much of a concern right now, though it is at the back of my mind.  I figure I can find whatever I need off the Internet somewhere.  I also have a whole slew of MIDI files.  I love MIDI!

Finally, look for a design document of sorts in the coming weeks in the Files section!.
