Walt Fles's ERIE WALK TRAIL Page

This is a summary of the current sections of the ERIE WALK TRAIL.
This is curtousey of the Rails to Trails program and the cooperting communities of Hammond, Highland, Griffth, Schererville and Crown Point.

Hammond Section
The north end of the trail is on Russell street, across from the Dan Rabyn commuter plaza.

The trail extends south crossing Douglas Street and the onto the property of the Old Erie Freight yard.

The trail then crosses Highland, Conkey/Calumet and then towards Maywood School.

Be Careful! Now you're crossing 165th street right next to Witham's Gas Mart.

Now you're the screwy Columbia/Joe Hirsch Road mess. A railroad haiving been there at one time may have something to do with this messy intersection. Now you're riding along side Southeastern Avenue.

169th Avenue can be treacherous!

Cross White Oak with care!

You're at 173rd! You're almost at the end of the Hammond Section.

Cross 175th now and then you're almost home!
The Gavit School students donated the funds for the sign at this point of the walk trail. As good as intentions that this random act of kindness had, it is historically inaccurate: It is spelled, "Erie - Lackawana", oops!

The walk trail extends to just under 80-94. From that point the Woodmar County Club owns the property. The WCC annexed it when the EL railroad was abandoned and extended the golf course east to the 80-94 to sountbounds Indianapolis Blvd exit. I wonder if any cars on the EL trains ever got hit by any golf balls?

Highland Section

The Walk Trail doesn't pick up again until Highland east of the Conrail/ Danville Line Tracks. There it extends from (?) street from the little park they have there towards to the Pleasant View Dairy. Now just southeast of the Dairy there was a Passenger/Freight station at one time.

Now you're at Highway Avenue crossing through the Downtown Highland Municipal parking lot. To your right is the shoe shop and the Highland Diner restaurant.

Careful! Kennedy Avenue is a busy intersection. To your left is the old highland lumber which is mentioned in my Railroad/Lumber Yard Page.

The trail extends through highland to 45th where the Highland section ends. As I peruse more of this trail through this community, I can list more details of it.

Griffith Section

The walk trails meanders through this community southeast starting on the south end of 45th avenue.

You are now entering Panter Territory! The walk trail passes behind Griffith High School!

The walk trail extends behind the Packing Corporation of America Building.

The EL tracks were removed from Main Street ( 53rd ) to accomadate the walk trail. Does that make you walkers/bikers feel guilty?

The North Griffith Section ends at Broad Street. Right on the same location as the old ERIE Passenger/Freight Station. Right across the street is the Griffith Historical Society musuem. Which, by the way, has there annual Railroad Fair every year on the last weekend of September. So, mark your calendars!

Schererrville Section

The walk trail doesn't pick up until just south of Burr Street.

You're walking through Foxwood now. Nice homes huh?

75th street isn't very busy, but still watch out for cars.

So far, this is the end of the walk trail. Hopefully the adjoining communities, in areas that are warrantable, will continue the construction of the walk trail on this still useful piece of land. Are you tired of from your journey? If so, then click here.Back to my home page
