| The Story of G.A.R. Post #626 As I mentioned in the story of Col. WAVR's brevet rank, I came upon a website which listed his rank as brevet Colonel. This site was a list of the posts of the Grand Army of the Republic. Walter's post was # 626 from West Hurley, NY. I figured this was great. Perhaps this post would have more information about my GGG Grandfather. I began to make inquiries regarding the post. The first email I sent was to the address at the bottom of the original page. She (Sue Greenhagen) replied that she did not know because she had not made up the list. She recommended I write to Mr. Ben Maryniak, the author of the list. I then wrote to the Hurley library and my message was forwarded to the Town Historian, David Baker, who wrote this response. "The original village of West Hurley and its environs were destroyed and what is left now are at the bottom of the Ashokan Reservoir." The next day, Ben Maryniak wrote back to me with this response. "NY GAR POST #626 only operated from 6-61888 to 1900 in West Hurley, Ulster County NY. It was probably organized because of the excitement over the 80th NYV monument being dedicated on the Gettysburg battlefield during July 1888." More info as it comes. |
