As the saying goes ... been
there, done that, got the T-shirt. Well, I did. And here's
some of my life told in the T-shirts I have ...
Youth With A Mission
(YWAM)
6
months, 1997
Three months training and
three months outreach in southern Africa. Cool experience, cool friends
and cool memories.
Bekezela Adventure Farm
1
year, 1997
This shirt was a gift from
one of the junior camps that I led. Working with kids in the leadership
training camps was very enjoyable, and I always love going back for all
the memories and the fun.
Midlands Pine Products
1
year, 1998
My start in the working
world, earning basic pay, sanding tables all day, until I got promoted
to Data Capture Clerk after a few weeks.
Sevenoaks Sawmills
6
months, 1999
My computer reputation got
me this job, running an automated briquette plant from my computer, and
managing a small workforce. One click of a mouse, and those hammermills
started to roar behind me ... awesome!
Kopano Residence
3
years, 2000
My university residence
... making tons of friends, enjoying studies and loving Cape Town.
The squirrel was our mascot.
Kopano Residence House
Committee
1
year, 2001
I got voted in as treasurer,
handling the R160 000 budget. Sweet. Ah, the feeling of financial
power ... only to face the music when the budget statement goes up :)
Kopano Residence Peer Helper
1
year, 2002
The residence shrink and his yellow action suit. They needed volunteers to be peer helpers and I was happy to sign up, but I think something frightened them off. Hmmmm?
USA Working Holiday
2 months, 2002
My grand money-making venture in America was very much the opposite, but for all my fruitless job hunting the memories are still saved up.
ACM Programming Olympiad
Too many times
I would never turn down a quiz challenge but these olympiads for people a little more brainy than me. They were famous for something more hands-on though: free food!
UCT Computer Science Honours
4 years, 2000-2003
Spent lots of money to learn some maths and codes and have a piece of paper in my hands when I visit employers. Actually my studies were a great chance to grow up and get ready for the "big wide world".
Scotland, Every Nation Church
2 years, 2005-2006
Time to see the world while I was young and single, and be useful while I was at it, by helping a new church plant in Edinburgh.
Ireland
7 days, 2005
Off to see Europe with my brother Michael, and what better way than to drive 1600 miles across the emerald isle?
I love Arsenal
long,long time
Been through thick and thin with my "close" friends, the Gunners. Started supporting them seriously from about 2001 and the ups and downs have been one of my life's small joys.
South Africa Cricket
From birth
Another love story. It's taken something for me to sing the praises of a team that drag you through the mud, come clean and then dive back in the mud again :)
