Welcome friends to a  world where evil reigns  Alagaësia
and there is only one hope, Eragon and his dragon Saphira.
Tyrannt King Galbatorix rules Alagaësia, after killing the old king with the help of The Thirteen Forsworn.
A History of Alagaësia

Alagaesia - Before Galbatorix's Rule
Before the race of Men, and yes, even before the race of Elves, the Dwarves roamed Alagaesia in all of their glory and freedom.  However, Alagasia was not only home to the Dwarves, but to lots of other animals and magical creatures too, including the Dragons.

It wasn't for over a hundred years later that the Elves came to Alagaesia from across the sea, but this was only the beginning.  From the very start, the Elves and the Dragons never really got along.

It all began when a foolish young Elf hunted down a Dragon and killed it, thinking of it as mere game.  This, however, was a big mistake.  Outraged by what happened, the Dragons rebelled and attacked the Elves, starting the beginning of a long and brutal war.

Over time, the conditions of the war did not improve, but worsen, due to the lack of communication between the Elves and the Dragons.  This problem was solved when the first Shur'tugal, Eragon, came to be.

Once Eragon's Dragon grew large enough, and Eragon's powers strong enough, they began traveling all over Alagaësia, making peace between the two races.  During their travels, they convinced the Elves and the Dragons to form and sign treaties and live in peace with one another.

Because of how useful Eragon the Shur'tugal proved to be, the Dragons gave the Elves two or three eggs a year, which could be hatched to form a new pair of Rider and Dragon.  The purpose of this was to keep peace between the Elves and the Dragons, and ensure a way of communication.  However, over time the Shur'tugal's power grew, gaining them more power and respect than any King, Queen or Ruler in all of Alagaesia.

This peace lasted for hundreds of years, until a disturbed Rider came into existence, named Galbatorix.  After he and his Dragon were ambushed, and his Dragon killed, Galbatorix was driving mad; mad at the thought of revenge.  After being denied a new Dragon by the Riders because of obvious psychological issues, Galbatorix was only driven further into madness, beginning another long and bloody war.

Alagaesia- After Galbatorix's Rule
With the help of Morzan, an his other evil Forsworns, Galbatorix killed all the known Shur'tugals... except for one.  Vrael, the last and most wise of the Shur'tugals was the only one with the power to defeat Galbatorix.  Finally, in the last battle, Galbatorix kicked Vrael in the back of his legs, allowing him to finally kill Vrael on Utgard.

Since that day, Galbatorix has ruled Alagaesia with his sick and twisted black Dragon, Shruikan.  His power has never been challenged, until the day Eragon, the farm boy from Carvahall, hatched one of the three remaining Dragon eggs, and brought back a race that Alagaesia hasn't seen for hundreds of years... the Shur'tugals have risen again.

What is an EldunarÍ?

Usage by Dragons

Eldunarí could be used by dragons as means of storing their consciousness, allowing them to "live" after their bodies had failed them, and also becoming a powerful tool of communication while the dragon remained alive. Typically, if a dragon didn't store their consciousness in it, a dragon's Eldunarí slowly dissolved along with the dragon's body after it died. However, if a dragon wanted to, it could place its consciousness into its Eldunarí, turning it the color of the dragon's scales and making it glow. This would make the dragon's consciousness live on forever within the jewel, unless the Eldunarí was broken. A dragon whose body had died, would live on inside his or her Eldunarí. However, a dragon could not smash its Eldunarí, so if it wanted to follow its Rider into the void (as some did) then it would either get someone else to smash their Eldunarí for them, or destroy it by one of the dragons' inexplicable pieces of magic. Galbatorix used the Eldunarí of dragons to boost his power and take control of Alagaësia.

Disgorgement

After a dragon had disgorged its Eldunarí, anyone in contact with it could call upon the dragon's strength and communicate with them over great distances as if they were standing next to the possessor. The energy an Eldunarí obtains for their sustenance comes from magic. When a dragon becomes resigned to their heart of hearts after death, they take with them the amount of spare energy they had when they died. Over five to seven years after the dragon's death, the amount of energy the dragon is able to store increases to astounding proportions. They obtained this energy through absorption of ambient energy or light.

Glaedr mentioned that when a dragon had disgorged its heart of hearts and the Rider lived on, the pair became known as "Indlvarn".Although it may have been difficult for the dragon, there were many Riders and dragons that adapted and continued to serve the Riders. Often, when the Rider of the Indlvarn pair died, the dragon contained within their Eldunarí would arrange for someone to destroy it for them.

Once a dragon disgorged its heart of hearts, it would not grow any larger than it was at the time of removal. It couldn't be restored to its position in the dragon's body.

The Varden

The Varden were members of an alliance that opposed the rule of King Galbatorix and his Empire. They consisted mainly of men and dwarves, though there was an alliance between the Varden and the elves, as well. The Varden also enlisted the aid of a group of magicians known as the Du Vrangr Gata (translated "The Wandering Path"). The Surdans were also known to aid the Varden in transporting supplies and sheltering those who did not wish to fight. Ajihad was the leader of the Varden, but was killed by Urgals in Eldest. Nasuada took his position.

The Varden's standard was described as a white dragon holding a rose above a sword pointing downward towards a purple field.

Brom

Leadership

The principal original founder of the Varden was Brom, who oversaw the establishment of the organization before handing over command to Weldon to pursue other exploits against the Empire, most notably hunting down and killing the Forsworn. Weldon was eventually replaced by Deynor, who was succeeded by Ajihad, the Varden's leader at the time of Eragon's arrival. Following Ajihad's death after the Battle of Farthen Dûr, his daughter, Nasuada took control. She decided to move all of the Varden to Surda, where she lead jointly with King Orrin, the king of Surda. After the death of Galbatorix, it was decided that Nasuada would lead the human kingdoms, with Surda and Teirm as her vassals.

Council of Elders

Main article: Council of Elders

The Council of Elders was the governing body of the Varden, aiding the Varden's leader in his or her decision-making as well electing each new leader. Another of their most important duties was to be the voice of the Varden's people to their leader.

After Ajihad's death, during the period in which the Coucil was deciding who to select to be the next leader of the Varden, Eragon learned that many members of the Council were corrupt, out to accomplish their own personal agendas instead of those of Ajihad and the Varden. They planned to elect Nasuada for their own benefit, believing that she was not strong or experienced enough to lead the Varden on her own and would thus be vulnerable and easy for them to manipulate.

History

Foundation and Early Days

Brom helped to found the Varden in an attempt to destroy the Empire. He "gathered together many of those who had been exiled, freed some who had been imprisoned, and with them formed the Varden." However, he was still driven by a desire for vengeance to pursue and kill Morzan, the first of the Forsworn, who had killed the original Saphira (Eragon's dragon's namesake, Brom's dragon). So he chose a close friend named Weldon to serve as leader of the Varden, and thus Weldon became its first leader (excluding Brom, who was only leader of the Varden during its foundation and left after that relatively short period).

Recovery of the egg

In addition to a formidable army, the Varden had an elaborate network of spies and agents located throughout Alagaësia; notable among these were Brom, who continued working for the Varden while trying to hunt down Morzan, and Jeod. In the years before Eragon's discovery of Saphira, the Varden worked hard to weaken Galbatorix's rule. Their agents assassinated many members of the Forsworn. These attacks would be vital to the rebellion in upcoming years.

Brom and Jeod developed a plan to steal the three dragon eggs in Galbatorix's possession. An agent of the Varden called Helfring infiltrated into Urû'baen, but his mission was partially foiled, and he was forced to flee with only one egg, pursued by both Morzan and Brom. Morzan obtained the egg at Gil'ead before he was defeated by Brom. The egg was successfully delivered to the Varden, but many believed Brom to be dead.

Deal with the elves

Having retrieved the one egg, the Varden and elves fell into a dispute about who should be the new Dragon Rider. The elves did not want the new Rider to be a human, and the Varden disliked the idea of an elf Dragon Rider deciding Alagaësia's fate.

After many debates, it was agreed that the elf Arya would carry the egg between the Varden base at Farthen Dûr and the elves' forest. Each race would have an equal opportunity of the egg hatching for them. Regardless of whom the egg hatched for, both races would be a part of the young Rider's training. Brom would teach the basics to the new Rider, and then the Rider would be sent to Ellesméra to complete his or her training.

New Rider War

The Battle under Farthen Dûr

The Varden intercepted an Imperial message, informing them of an impending attack on Farthen Dûr by Urgals and Kull camped at Ithrö Zhâda. The Varden and dwarves were able to prepare for the assault with the help of Eragon, his dragon Saphira, the elf Arya, and Murtagh, as well as the witch Angela, After Eragon killed the Shade Durza, a controlling link on the Urgals' minds was broken, and different tribes within the Urgal army turned on each other. This infighting gave the Varden the victory.

Ajihad's death

Ajihad

In the aftermath of the battle, Ajihad's scouting party, which included Murtagh and the Twins, was ambushed by a group of Urgals. Ajihad was killed, and Murtagh and the Twins were captured and assumed dead. In reality, the Twins, who were actually spies for the Empire, had arranged the ambush in order to take Murtagh to Urû'baen, where the red dragon Thorn hatched for him.

The council elected the seventeen-year-old Nasuada as the new leader, figuring that she would be merely a puppet in their hands. To their dismay, Eragon swore allegiance to Nasuada, not the council, and their plan backfired in its entirety when Nasuada proved a headstrong and resolved ruler.

Relocation

The battle had taken a heavy toll on the dwarves' supplies, so Nasuada was forced to relocate the Varden to the neighboring country of Surda, which was sympathetic to their cause. Still short on funds, Nasuada ordered the Du Vrangr Gata to magically manufacture large quantities of lace, which the Varden then sold to the inhabitants of Surda. Her action understandably angered the Silk Guild, but it ensured the Varden's survival.

The Burning Plains

Galbatorix moved against the Varden once more, this time sending a large army, and the new Dragon Rider Murtagh, to The Burning Plains, northwest of Surda. Together with the armies of Surda under King Orrin, as well as Arya, Eragon, and villagers from Carvahall, Nasuada and the Varden again managed to defeat the Imperial forces, mainly because Murtagh and Thorn decided to ignore their orders and return to Urû'baen without Eragon and Saphira.

A Summary of the Inheritance Cycle

In the fictional land of Alagaësia, there was an order which oversaw the countries and brought peace to the world. This group was known as the Dragon Riders, for they rode dragons, at the birth of which a bond was formed in accordance with a pact made between elves and dragons millennia earlier. One Dragon Rider named Galbatorix had his dragon slain by a group of Urgals; the dragon's death drove him mad. Denied another Dragon by the Council of Elder Riders, Galbatorix blamed the Council for the death of his dragon and sought to destroy the order. He made an alliance with a young rider, Morzan, and with his help slew another rider and took his dragon, Shruikan. Using magic, he broke Shruikan's will and forced the dragon to serve him. Gathering more Riders to his cause, he created the Thirteen Forsworn and with their help, took over Ilirea, the capital of the Broddring Kingdom, and destroyed Vroengard, the center of the Dragon Riders. Galbatorix slew the Elders, their leader Vrael, and most of the Dragon Riders. When the remaining dragons found out that the betrayal was aided by their own species, they collectively cast a spell on the Forsworn's dragons, which made them unable to be named. As they lost their personal identities, the dragons became little more than beasts.

Elder Rider Oromis and his Dragon Glaedr fled to Ellesmera, the capital of the elves' kingdom, while Morzan confronted his old friend Brom, slaying his Dragon. However, Morzan showed mercy to Brom, who later escaped. After the fall of the Riders, Galbatorix reformed the Broddring Kingdom into the Empire, naming himself Emperor. He then focused his efforts into going after the elves and the dwarfs but he was thwarted.

Over the next century, several of the Forsworn were killed either from battle or power struggles, or committed suicide after going mad. Surda declared independence from Galbatorix and became its own country. Brom created the Varden, a rebellion meant to oppose the Empire, killing three of the Forsworn including Morzan; and orchestrated the deaths of five more. Brom and Morzan's wife, Selena, fell in love while Brom was working undercover in Morzan's staff (though this is revealed in the third book). Selena, who already had had Morzan's son, became pregnant with Brom's child. She returned to Carvahall, her brother Garrow's home, to give birth to the child. After begging her brother and his wife to raise her son, Eragon, as their own, she left Carvahall to return to Morzan and her first son. She died soon afterward. When Brom needed to disappear he traveled to Carvahall to live, disguised as a storyteller to be near his son.

The first book in the series started with the attack on Arya, who was carrying a dragon's egg, by Durza, a servant of Galbatorix. Only two other Dragon eggs remain in the citadel in Ilirea, which has been renamed Urû'baen. Arya attempted to send the egg to Brom, but the remaining Eldunarí altered the spell making the egg go to Eragon, because they believed that the egg might hatch for him (revealed in the final book), who finds the egg while on a hunting trip. A few days later, the egg hatches, and Eragon names the hatchling Saphira, becoming a Dragon Rider through their bond. His cousin, Roran, leaves for a job to earn money so he can start a family with his beloved, Katrina. His uncle, Garrow, is killed by King Galbatorix's servants, the Ra'zac, and Eragon flees Carvahall with Brom to hunt down the Ra'zac, unbeknownst to him that Brom is his father. Brom gives Morzan's sword, Zar'roc, to Eragon.

On the journey, Brom teaches Eragon sword fighting, magic, the Ancient Language, and the ways of the Dragon Riders. On the journey they become close friends. Half way through their journey, their camp is ambushed by the Ra'zac and a stranger named Murtagh rescues them, but Brom is gravely injured. In his dying breath, Brom reveals to Eragon that he once was a Dragon Rider and his Dragon was also named Saphira.

Eragon decides to follow his dream of Arya to Gil'ead. Murtagh and Eragon rescue the courier Arya who reveals she is an elf and is in need of the Varden's medical assistance. They flee to the Varden as they are being chased by Urgals to the capital Tronjheim. As they are trapped, Murtagh is revealed to be Morzan's son. The Varden imprisons Murtagh after he refuses to allow his mind to be read, as Murtagh doesn't want them to learn of his parentage. Eragon is introduced to the Varden's leader, Ajihad, his daughter Nasuada, the dwarf King Hrothgar, and his foster son Orik. The Varden are attacked by an army of Urgals. In the ensuing battle, Eragon gets separated from the main fighting and finds himself in a one-on-one duel with Durza. In the duel, Eragon receives a large scar on his back, but Arya and Saphira create a distraction long enough for Eragon to stab Durza through the heart. In the aftermath, Ajihad is killed by a band of Urgals and Murtagh is captured.

In the remainder of the Rider War, Eragon and Saphira learn under the tutelage of Oromis and Glaedr in Ellesmera. During an elvish Blood-Oath Celebration, Eragon is changed by the dragons, giving him elf-like abilities (speed, strength) and healing his back as well as all of his other injuries. Eragon then reveals his true feelings to Arya . After much persistence, Arya angrily rejects Eragon's suit. Meanwhile, Nasuada moves the Varden to the separate country of Surda which is ruled by King Orrin, and Roran moves the villagers of Carvahall to Surda, after their village was destroyed by the Raz'ac, who also captured Katrina. Roran is promoted to Captain while Nasuada allows the Urgals to join the ranks of the Varden. Eragon and Saphira confront Murtagh and Thorn, who slew King Hrothgar. Murtagh bests Eragon, taking his sword Zar'roc, and revealing to him the truth that they are brothers.

Eragon, Saphira, and Roran arrive at Helgrind, where they free Katrina. Eragon and Roran destroy much of Helgrind, slaying the Raz'ac while Saphira kills the Lethrblaka, the Raz'ac's adult form. After which, he goes to the Boer mountains and helps Orik become king of the dwarves. After that, Eragon goes back to the Du Weldenvarden and creates his own sword Brisingr, which bursts into flames each time Eragon speaks its name, and learns that Brom is his real father (he and Murtagh are half brothers) and of the Eldunarí, the hearts of hearts, which is also the source to Galbatorix's power from Oromis and Glaedr.

The Varden captures several cities of the Empire, and Oromis and Glaedr are killed by Murtagh and Thorn, though Glaedr has given his Eldunarí to Eragon and Saphira to further their training. After the defeat of one of the Empire's cities, Nasuada is captured for interrogation by Murtagh, who heals her of her injuries, which causes an identity switch, breaking his oath to Galbatorix. Eragon travels to the Vault of Souls on the ruined Vroengard, which has a massive amount of secret Eldunarí and Dragon eggs hidden from Galbatorix. Taking much of the Eldunarí, he faces Galbatorix and after a fierce battle (after Murtagh and Thorn decide to help them), Galbatorix is slain by Eragon's certain Spell. Meanwhile, Shruikan is killed by Arya.

Murtagh and Thorn retreat to somewhere in the north to have some time to themselves. Nasuada, after a heated debate with the leaders of the Varden, becomes the High Queen of Alagaësia. Arya returns to Du Weldenvarden to help choose a new monarch for the elves after the death of Queen Islanzadí in battle, and is chosen. She takes with her the rescued green dragon egg, which soon hatches for her. Thus, Arya becomes a Rider with her dragon named Fírnen. Near the end of the book, Arya reveals this to Eragon, and Saphira decides to test Fírnen "to see if he has the iron in his bones, and the fire in his belly to match her". They become mates shortly thereafter.

Eragon reworks the magic of the original pact between Riders and dragons to include both Dwarves and Urgals, allowing the dragon eggs to hatch for members of their races. Eragon, coming to the conclusion that there is no safe place to raise the dragons and train new Riders in Alagaësia, begins planning transport of the Eldunarí and the eggs to a region east of Alagaësia, save for two eggs which are kept in Alagaësia: one is to be sent to the dwarves, and the other to the Urgals. Those future Riders will travel to Eragon's new home for training, while new eggs will be sent back to Alagaësia to hatch for new Riders.
