Harry woke up with his face in his arms, sitting in his chair. Lily and James were gone, and Harry found their rings on a chain, around his neck. He scowled. Harry hated any and all jewelry. He heard Dudley wake up, and then set downstairs to start making breakfast. Once he got downstairs, he heard the doorbell ring. He looked at his watch, which read 7:31 am. "That was odd," Harry thought, "because no one usually can before 11:00 in the morning, even if it was the milkman". He opened the door, and found himself facing a tall person entirely robed in black. He couldn't see their face, and found himself slowly backing away from them. The person, stepped into the household, and drew back their hood. Harry found himself facing someone he never thought would be able to find him in the safety of the Dursleys. Sirius.
Sirius walked towards Harry, and hugged him so tight Harry thought he was going to burst. Sirius sat down as Harry started to fry some bacon, and they talked about everything on their minds. Harry never once questioned Sirius how he managed to find him at the Dursleys, until he noticed Sirius was fingering a red stone on a chain around his neck, before concealing it into his robes. Harry thought this was weird, but put it behind him, because after all, Sirius was talking to him. Finally, Sirius brought up the gift he had given Harry.
"Harry, what do those rings do exactly?"
Harry was confused. He thought Sirius had known all about the rings.
"Well, um, when I put them on, I can talk to my mum and dad."
"Can anyone talk to them, Harry?"
"Yea, I think so. It would make sense. Dad said that it was a Soul Memory Charm."
At this, Sirius looked somewhat awkward, like he was going to say something he didn't want to say.
"Well, Harry, do they know about the last minute switch with Peter? I wouldn't want them to think that I gave their lives away."
"They know, Sirius. I told them. Do you want to talk to them yourself?"
"I don't know, Harry. I'm not even supposed to be here. Isn't this the Dursleys?"
"Yeah, but I dont care. Maybe the Dursleys will finally get sick of me altogether and kick me out."
"Harry, I dont want that"
"Do you want to talk to my parents or not, Sirius?"
Harry didnt give him time to answer, but jammed the rings on his fingers, and winced at the familiar painful throbbing in his hand. Suddenly, Lily and James were standing facing him, their backs to Sirius. Harry could see the astonished look on Sirius' face through his parents, and smiled. James looked startled, and said, "Harry, I didn't think you would call us back this early." Harry smirked, and pointed in Sirius' direction.
James' mouth dropped open, and broke into a broad smile. Sirius looked mortified.
"Sirius! How are you? Aren't you in supposed to be in hiding?"
Harry continued to cook the Dursleys breakfast while Lily, James, and Sirius talked about everything. Harry constantly looked at his watch. Uncle Vernon came down the stairs at precisely nine o'clock each morning before heading off to work. Harry had set his watch to two different times. When he was supposed to wake up, and when he was supposed to have breakfast ready, at 9:00. Lily was in the middle of examining the pictures on the wall, of Dudley as a baby, Dudley as a small boy (although he was never really very small) and Dudley as he was now, a tall boy about the size of a small beluga whale. Suddenly, Harry heard the unmistakable creak of the loose step on the stairs, and they all looked toward the ceiling. Someone was walking down the stairs. Harry ripped his parent's rings of his fingers, and they vanished with a small pop. Sirius was still sitting at the kitchen table, looking absolutely terrified. The door to the kitchen slowly opened, and Aunt Petunia stood in front of the door. Her mouth dropped open at the scene, looking from Harry to Sirius and then back to Harry. Harry put his hands through his hair, and said, "Petunia, this is my godfather, Sirius. He came to visit me and to meet you." Harry knew this wasn't true, but he could think of nothing else to say. Aunt Petunia looked to Sirius, and said in her syrupy voice, "I'm so terribly sorry that Harry forgot his manners and didn't offer you breakfast, Serous."
Harry chuckled. Aunt Petunia couldn't even get his name right.
"Actually, ma'am, its Sirius."
Petunia blushed a deep pink, and apologized for her mistakes. Harry was dumbstruck by how civil Petunia was to Sirius. Then, the door that led into the kitchen opened again, this time producing Uncle Vernon. Over the summer Harry had only gotten worse at controlling his emotions as a wizard, and had broken three sets of china, Aunt Petunia's favorite tea pot, Dudley's new 4 foot by 4 foot t.v, and Uncle Vernon's company car fender. To say in the least, Uncle Vernon's hatred towards Harry was worse than ever. Uncle Vernon surveyed the kitchen, saw Harry tending to breakfast and Petunia offering tea to a man he'd never met before. So he did what any good Dursley would do. He sat down and began to discuss his impressive job. Sirius was so startled by this version of the Dursleys he could barely speak. Once Dudley came down the stairs singing "Oh, I'd rather be a Kipper with a Fishhook", it was all too much. Sirius burst out laughing in the middle of Vernon talking about selective car salesmen. Harry was nearly as surprised as Sirius, seeing as how Dudley usually sang "The Love of my Life, my Good Rubber Boots" when he came downstairs each morning. Uncle Vernon sat up straight in his chair, staring at Sirius as though he was the most insane man he had ever met. He gradually got redder and redder in the face, turning cream into a blotchy magenta. Sirius stopped laughing, and stared at Uncle Vernon oddly. Then, Uncle Vernon burst.
"You! I think I know who you areyour one of his kind, aren't you?!" |
