An anamonic is a mnemonic device to help you remember anagrams. Cute, eh? The idea is that if you hold AEINORT on your rack, and want to find an 8-letter word through a tile on board, you just remember a phrase like "czars had a bad plan". Each of the letters in this phrase combine with the 7-letter rack to form an 8-letter word, so you can focus on that open C on board and not waste valuable clock looking at that G. Six letter stems might help you figure out what to declare the blank, and 8-letter stems can be useful in finding those elusive 9s. Some mild mental gymnastics are required on these, as you have to combine your rack plus the potential thru-letters, then subtract one to create a recognizable stem, etc. But for some, it may be easier than hoping you can spot REDINGOTE on your own.
I, and many other players, find these tools useful not only to determine what bingos may be lurking in our racks, but to avoid wasting time looking for bingos where none exist. Anamonics may also enable you to challenge legit-looking phonies with 100% confidence. Suppose your opponent plays RELAYERS*, and your anamonic for AEELRRS is "expecting incentive". You can be assured the word is no good since there is no Y in the previous phrase.

An asterisk next to the anamonic means vowels don't count. A hash (#) means the stem word is only good in the SOWPODS lexicon.
