Frank WWII

Red Line

Frank's military service was not limited to the First World War. He was also in the Second World War. He enlisted from Waukegan, IL in the Navy's 22nd Construction Battalion (The Seabees) on June 16, 1942 at age 45 as a Frank WWII F1c.  Frank was a Waukegan Firefighter. He was discharged as a Metalsmith third class.

The Seabees needed experienced tradesmen and the men were older than the average sailor. The 22nd C.B. was organized in the summer of 1942 and left for the Alaskan Theater in November because of the Japanese invasion and occupation of the Aleutian Islands of Kiska and Attu. The Navy and the 7th Infantry Division were sent to challenge the Japs. The garrison on Kiska was bypassed because of insufficient American forces but Attu was invaded on May 11, 1943 and after 3 weeks was captured. The Japs were not well supplied at Kiska and before the American forces could invade they slipped out during stormy and foggy weather and were not caught. American forces took back Kiska on August 15th. The 22nd Seabees moved into Attu July 6, 1943. The 22nd CB unit was inactivated on June 9, 1944.

Frank was discharged on December 21, 1944 at the US Navy Hospital in Shoemaker, CA.  Frank died at the age of 78 on July 4th, 1975 in the VA Medical Center at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He is buried in the North Shore Garden of Memories at North Chicago, IL
