Last October (10/13/00) I
visited Summit Point in West Virginia to participate in an event
referred to as "FATT" or Friday At The Track with the local
school, BSR. In short, it consists of four 20 minute lapping
sessions with an instructor, 2 classroom sessions and a skid pad
session. The whole thing lasts all day and is invigorating,
exasperating, and exhausting. I liken it to riding a rollercoaster
that YOU control.
Pictured above is a diagram of Summit Point Raceway's 2 mile course.
I have done this as recent as March, 2001 with my wife, both of us using the same car. Together we logged an impressive 165 miles. So much for the 30+ miles per/gal on the sticker ;). I think miles per/gal on the track was something like 15. All the staff and instructors are very helpful and encouraging. All of them have race experience, but different instructors instruct differently so I found out. The most recent time I went my instructor was a guy named Chris. He was my instructor for 3 out of the 4 sessions and I found out that he was the ITA regional champion for 2 year running. What car did he accomplish this feat? A CRX of course. This was one of the niceties that I found about the crew at BSR. They try and find a good "match" for you.

Above is my 1990 CRX Si during my October 2000 trip.
The other one of the sessions, the third of the four sessions, I had a seasoned veteran of the BSR school accompany me. And in his words could "drive the car just as well from here", meaning the passenger's seat," as I can from there," meaning the driver's seat. I didn't quite believe him at first, but I would soon realize that he was entirely correct. More on that later. I have to describe here what the session was like this time out. Since I was late arriving for the third session, not of my own doing, my usual instructor was no where to be found, so I was lucky to get an instructor and this guy was good. I'd never gone so fast, and found my limits like this ever before. My wife and a friend who was there both said that there was a "pack" of cars that was almost about to lap me when I went onto the track, and by the end of the session I was the one hot on there tails. This has much to do with my instructor this time out. He had me brake much latter and gas on much earlier. Words can't describe the feeling accept for the few choice word I repeated to myself while sitting on my tool box and rocking back and forth for a good 2 minutes with a wide Cheshire cat smile. I'd say this is why racing is so addictive. The adrenaline rush is incredible, and did a good job making me giddy.
