I've been trying my hand at first aid stuff -- but my fingers are all thumbs - -" 35 "This is 'Pop' Hadley - - a great advocate of Mr. Volstead and the best watchman in camp!" 36 "He's right, Miss - - I'm the only watchman!" 37 The route to camp leads through some of the best standing timber. 38 "I guess we got a drink comin' - - takin' chances of getting bumped off any minute!" 39 "Hey, Jacques - - bring us another bottle!" 40 "Get out of this camp - - if I catch you again I'll wring your neck!" 41 "Drinking this half- breed's rotten whiskey isn't going to keep you from getting shot - - use your heads, boys!" 42 "Now you see what this booze will do, boys! figure it out for yourselves." 43 "Its harder to get rid of you, than it was any of my wives!" 44 "I'm sorry this happened, Miss Ford - - they're good boys but this shootin has got their goat!" 45 The duty of a woods foreman is to explain the woods to his boss - - particularly if she is young and attractive! 46 Topping" the tallest trees for ship masts and telegraph poles. 47 "Get me to the hospital as quick as you can!" 48 "Oh, what lovely flowers - - did you pick them for our sick boys?" 49 "No - - er - - 'Pop' - - he picked 'em for you!" 50 "Thank you for sending me these beautiful flowers." 51 "He's the guy that done it." 52 Going to the village for the mail is always a good excuse! 53 "Where have you been hiding - - I haven't had a chance to thank you for the flowers you fibbed to me about!" 54 "Dr. Horton and I are engaged to be married." 55 "My congratulations - - the Doc is a mighty fine fellow!" 56 Edith was the first to realize she was drifting into dangerous waters - - so she tried to de- vote more time to the doctor. 57 "Boy - - don't let no woman worry you none - - they're funny critters - - I reckon I know all there is to know about 'em!" 58 "I married four of 'em - - at one time and another - -" 59 "Allus askin' me for money - - an wantin' to eat all the time!" 60 Reports of Deveroux's mysterious activities sent Bannister recon- noitering into the enemy's territory. 61 A dam across the only outlet for the Ford logs - - a direct defiance of custom and the law! 62 "Deveroux, you know if we go to law it will take all winter to settle it - -" 63 "- - so I'm tellin' you now to get that dam out by next week or I'll, personally, break every bone in your body!" 64 "That's final!" 65 The Doctor returning to camp from an emergency call in the village. - - 66 The only shelter for several miles! 67 "He has severed an artery and is dying - - only a blood transfusion will save him - - you will volunteer?" 68 "Me? Me geeve my blood to save heem?" 69 "But think, man - - you can save a human life! The small amount of blood to save him won't hurt you." 70 "He's keeck me out of he's camp - - let heem die!" 71 "I got one ver' fine she- wolf - - hee's blood plenty good enough for Bannister - - I give you that wolf!" 72 "Get your wolf - - It's my one chance to save him!" 73 "This must be kept secret - - not a word to anyone!" 74 With a life in the balance. 75 In the week that followed. 76 "I knew a fella once whose wife gave him rat poison - - and before he died he looked jes' like Dick does now!" 77 A fight in the "big timber" is only a fight - - but Deveroux's conscience was none too clear! 78 "Bannister's men are on edge - - if he dies - - look out!" 79 But careful nursing sometimes works wonders - - 80 "I dreamed I had been hobnobbing with the angels - - now I see it was no dream!" 81 "Is he dead yet, ma'am?" 82 "Watch out, boss, - - I got sick oncet an' dern if a woman didn't up an' marry me before I got outa bed!" 83 "You look out for that Bannister - - he's half wolf now - - 84 "I tell you eet's happen in my cabin - - the Doc she take my wolf - - 85 Jacques' story had fallen on fertile ground - - nat- urally superstitious, the lumber jacks were quick to believe the worst. 86 "I heard a funny story about you to-day, Dick!" 87 "Jacques, the half breed is telling a wild story around that you're half wolf!" 88 "He seems to be in earn- est, too, - - says He can prove you've got Wolf's blood in your veins." 89 "Don't bother about a lot of idle gossip - - I'm watching your condition carefully." 90 But somehow, when Ban- nister was up and around, the old friendliness be- tween the men and their woods boss was gone! 91 To the simple minds of the woodsmen - - Bannister was now an outcast! a man with the blood of a wolf! - - a being to shun!! 92 "I want a showdown on this thing! whats the matter with you fellows!!" 93 Torn by the contrast be- tween her promise to marry the doctor - - and the real love she now realizes. 94 "Don't you understand, Edith - - the blood through his brain will change his whole character - - his mentality - - his desires - - his whole life!" 95 "Why did you do this thing to me!" 96 "It was to save your life, Bannister!" 97 "Why didn't you let me die! - - you've made me a thing that is neither man nor beast!!" 98 "Dick! Don't leave me - - I don't care what you are! I love you!!" 99 To Bannister's mind - - weakened from the loss of blood at the time of his injury came the re- membrance of the weird tales of the Loup Garou of the Far North - - The Wolf in human form! 100 "Man or beast - - I love you!" 101 "Afraid!! - - You too!" 102 After a day of frantic search for the missing Bannister - - a grue- some story came out of the woods - - 103 "Deveroux was found dead, Miss - - with his throat torn out like a wolf had done it - -" 104 To the listener on the other side of the cabin wall - - each word fell like the blow of a trip hammer - - 105 For he could not re- member where he had been nor what he had done! 106 "- - the boys are afraid Bannister went crazy and murdered him!" 107 Vague - - haunting phantoms of a shock bewildered mind came to jeer and mock him. 108 "My God - - this terrible thing is true - - I am a beast! I'm one of the pack!" 109 A sound from the forest that echoed the call in his brain! 110 The call of the phantom pack! 111 Wolfs head rock - - with its sheer drop of a thousand feet!! 112 The compelling power of a great love!! 113 "The Wolves were tearing at him when the half breed got there - -" 114 "Because Deveroux died he told Jacques - - that it was a fair fight - - and you whipped him - - but going home he fell and broke his ankle - - and then the wolves came. - -" 115 "- - The wolf blood in your veins can't hurt you now, Bannister - - I lied to her, that night in the cabin - -" 116 "- - Because I love her too - - and I wanted her myself!" 117 "Be generous, Dick, and forgive him - - as I do." 118 Then - - as the autumn frosts commenced to touch the stately pines with silver - - 119 They came to the begin- ning of that wondrous trail that leads to the road of lifelong happiness!Home
