The Ten Commandments

1
  Our modern world defined God
as a "religious complex" and laughed
at the Ten Commandments as OLD
FASHIONED.
Then, through the laughter, came the
shattering thunder of the World War.
And now a blooddrenched, bitter world
- no longer laughing - cries for a way out.

2
There is but one way out. It existed
before it was engraven upon Tablets of
Stone. It will exist when stone has
crumbled. The Ten Commandments are
not rules to obey as a personal favor
to God. They are the fundamental
principles without which mankind
cannot live together.
They are not laws - they are the LAW.

3
"AND THE EGYPTIANS MADE THE CHILDREN
OF ISRAEL TO SERVE WITH RIGOUR.
AND THEY MADE THEIR LIVES BITTER
WITH HARD BONDAGE, IN MORTAR
AND IN BRICK, AND IN ALL MANNER
OF SERVICE IN THE FIELD."
		(Exodus 1:13-14)

4
 MIRIAM - THE
SISTER OF MOSES.

5
"KNEEL TO THE KING OF KINGS,
THE CONQUEROR OF CONQUERORS!
KNEEL TO THE MIGHTY PHARAOH
- DOGS OF ISRAEL!"

6
DATHAN, THE
DISCONTENTED.

7
RAMESES, THE MAGNIFICENT
  - PHARAOH OF EGYPT.

8
"IF A MAN CLOG THE
WHEELS OF THE PHARAOH
- HE SHALL BE GROUND
INTO THE DUST!"

9
"LORD GOD OF ISRAEL - SEE
THE AFFLICTION OF THY PEOPLE
WHICH ARE IN EGYPT, AND
HEAR OUR CRY!"
		(Exodus 3:7)

10
AND GOD SAW THE AFFLICTION
OF HIS PEOPLE, AND HE SENT
INTO EGYPT, MOSES, THE GREAT
LAWGIVER - COMMANDED TO
FREE ISRAEL FROM THE CHAINS
    OF THE OPPRESSOR.

11
AARON, BROTHER OF
MOSES - PRIEST OF
ISRAEL.

12
"MIGHTY PHARAOH, MY FATHER -
THIS MAN HAS TORMENTED US
ALREADY WITH NINE PLAGUES!
LET US SLAY HIM, BEFORE A
TENTH!"

13
"I KNEEL BUT TO ONE, THE LORD
GOD OF ISRAEL - WHO HATH
SMITTEN THE EGYPTIANS WITH
NINE PLAGUES, BECAUSE THOU
DOST NOT LET HIS PEOPLE GO!"

14
"THESE ISRAELITES BE IDLE,
CRYING 'LET US GO.' THERE-
FORE, LET MORE WORK BE
LAID UPON THEM."
		(Exodus 5:8-9)

15
"BE WARNED, O PHARAOH, LET ISRAEL
DEPART. OR GOD WILL COME INTO
THE MIDST OF EGYPT, AND ALL THE
FIRSTBORN SHALL DIE - FROM THE
FIRSTBORN OF PHARAOH, EVEN UNTO
THE FIRSTBORN OF THE CAPTIVE
IN THE DUNGEON."
		(Exodus 12:29)

16
"THINKEST THOU THE CURSE OF THY
GOD CAN DESTROY THE SON OF
PHARAOH - WHOSE GOLDEN SANDALS
HAVE BEEN BEATEN FROM THE
CROWNS OF CONQUERED KINGS?"

17
"AND IT CAME TO PASS THAT AT
MIDNIGHT, THE LORD SMOTE ALL
THE FIRSTBORN IN THE LAND OF
EGYPT. AND THERE WAS A GREAT
CRY IN EGYPT - FOR THERE
WAS NOT A HOUSE WHERE THERE
WAS NOT ONE DEAD."
		(Exodus 12:29-30)

18
"MIGHTY PHARAOH -
THY SON IS DEAD!"

19
"THIS NIGHT THE LORD HATH SMITTEN
ALL THE FIRSTBORN IN THE LAND OF
EGYPT; AND AGAINST THE GODS OF EGYPT
HATH HE EXECUTED JUDGMENT. NOW,
THEREFORE, O PHARAOH, WILT THOU
LET HIS PEOPLE DEPART?"

20
"GET YOU FORTH FROM AMONG MY
PEOPLE, BOTH YE AND THE CHILDREN
OF ISRAEL, TO SERVE YOUR LORD.
TAKE YOUR FLOCKS AND YOUR
HERDS - AND BE GONE!"
		(Exodus 12:31-32)

21
"HEARKEN YE GODS OF EGYPT!
SHOW THAT YE ARE STRONGER
THAN THIS GOD OF ISRAEL -
AND CALL BACK LIFE INTO THE
BODY OF MY SON."

22
"AND IT CAME TO PASS, EVEN THE SELF
SAME NIGHT, THAT ALL THE HOSTS OF
THE LORD WENT OUT FROM THE LAND
OF EGYPT.
AND THEY DESPOILED THE EGYPTIANS
OF JEWELS OF SILVER, JEWELS OF GOLD,
AND RAIMENT."
		(Exodus 12:41-36)

23
"AND IT CAME TO PASS, WITH
THE COMING OF THE DAY, THAT
PHARAOH'S ANGER WAXED HOT
AGAINST ISRAEL - FOR HIS
GODS COULD NOT PUT LIFE INTO
THE BODY OF HIS SON.

24
"MY FIRSTBORN, WHOM I HAVE LOVED,
HEAR ME! THIS DAY SHALL ISRAEL
BE GROUND UNDER THE CHARIOTS
OF EGYPT! THUS SHALT THOU
BE AVENGED UPON THEIR GOD!"

25
"SOUND THE TRUMPETS! LET THE
CHARIOTS BE MADE READY - FOR
WE SHALL BE AVENGED A THOUSAND
FOLD UPON THESE DOGS OF ISRAEL!"

26
"AND THEY GATHERED BEFORE THE GREAT
GATES OF RAMESES - SIX HUNDRED
CHOSEN CHARIOTS, AND ALL THE CHARIOTS
OF EGYPT, AND CAPTAINS OVER EVERY
ONE OF THEM."
		(Exodus 14:7)

27
"AND THE EGYPTIANS PURSUED
AFTER THEM, ALL THE HORSES AND
CHARIOTS OF PHARAOH AND HIS
HORSEMEN, AND OVERTOOK THEM
BY THE RED SEA."
		(Exodus 14:9)

28
"AND WHEN THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL
LIFTED UP THEIR EYES, AND SAW THE
HOSTS OF PHARAOH BEHIND THEM -
THE PEOPLE WERE SORE AFRAID."
		(Exodus 14:10)

29
"BECAUSE THERE WERE NO
GRAVES IN EGYPT - HAST
THOU TAKEN US AWAY TO
DIE IN THE WILDERNESS!"
	(Exodus 14:11)

30
"FEAR AND DREAD SHALL FALL UPON
THEM! BY THE GREATNESS OF THINE
ARM, O LORD, THEY SHALL BE AS
STILL AS A STONE - TILL THY PEOPLE
PASS OVER."
		(Exodus 15:16)

31
"AND THE PILLAR OF FIRE WENT
FROM BEFORE THEIR FACE AND
STOOD BEHIND THEM - AND IT
CAME BETWEEN THE EGYPTIANS
AND THE CAMP OF ISRAEL."
		(Exodus 14:19-20)

32
"AND MOSES STRETCHED OUT HIS
HAND OVER THE SEA; AND THE
LORD CAUSED THE SEA TO GO
BACK, AND MADE THE SEA DRY
LAND, AND THE WATERS WERE
DIVIDED."
		(Exodus 14:21)

33
"FEAR NOT TO PASS THROUGH
THE DEEP WATERS - FOR
THE LORD FIGHTETH ON
OUR SIDE!"

34
"AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL
WENT INTO THE MIDST OF THE SEA
UPON DRY GROUND - AND THE
WATERS WERE A WALL UNTO
THEM ON THEIR RIGHT HAND, AND
ON THEIR LEFT."
		(Exodus 14:22)

35
"FEAR NOT THIS GOD
OF ISRAEL - FOLLOW
AND DESTROY THEM!"

36
"WITH HIS STRENGTH HE
GUIDED ISRAEL - AND
THEY CAME SAFELY UNTO
THE OTHER SHORE."

37
"AND THE EGYPTIANS PURSUED AND
WENT IN AFTER THEM TO THE MIDST
OF THE SEA - EVEN ALL PHARAOH'S
HORSES, HIS CHARIOTS, AND HIS
HORSEMEN."
		(Exodus 14:23)

38
"THOU HAST BETRAYED US, AND
WE ARE LOST! FOR BEHOLD,
THE EGYPTIANS ARE UPON US!"

39
"FEAR YE NOT, STAND
STILL, AND SEE THE
SALVATION OF THE LORD!"
		(Exodus 14:13)

40
"THE LORD IS OUR STRENGTH
AND SONG, AND HE IS
BECOME OUR SALVATION."
		(Exodus 15:2)

41
"IN THE THIRD MONTH, CAME THEY
INTO THE WILDERNESS OF SINAI,
AND CAMPED BEFORE THE MOUNT,
AND MOSES WAS WITH THE LORD
ON THE MOUNT FOR FORTY DAYS
AND FORTY NIGHTS."
		(Exodus 19:1-2
                        24:18)

42
"AND THE THUNDERINGS, AND THE
LIGHTNINGS, AND THE NOISE OF THE
TRUMPET, AND THE MOUNTAIN
SMOKING, AND THE SIGHT OF
THE GLORY OF THE LORD -
WAS LIKE DEVOURING FIRE."
		(Exodus 20:18
                        24:17)

43
"AND HE GAVE UNTO MOSES, TWO
TABLES OF TESTIMONY, TABLES
OF STONE - WRITTEN WITH
THE FINGER OF GOD."
		(Exodus 31:18)

44
"AND WHEN THE PEOPLE SAW THAT
MOSES DELAYED, THEY MURMURED AND
CAME UNTO AARON, SAYING: UP, MAKE
US GODS WHICH SHALL GO BEFORE US!
AND AARON TOOK THEIR GOLD AND
CAST IT INTO THE FIRE AND FASHION-
ED A GOLDEN CALF."
		(Exodus 32:1)

45
"SEEMETH IT A SMALL THING TO
YOU, THAT YE WORSHIP IDOLS
- FORSAKING THE GOD
THAT BROUGHT YOU UP OUT OF
BONDAGE?"

46
BUT THE PEOPLE HAD FORGOTTEN
THEIR GOD, AND WERE SET ON MISCHIEF
AND CORRUPTION.
AND WITH NOISE OF SINGING AND
CLASHING OF CYMBALS, THEY STRIPPED
THEMSELVES - AND BOWED DOWN
AND WORSHIPPED THE GOLDEN CALF.

47
  "COME WORSHIP YE THE
GOLDEN GOD OF PLEASURE!
  FOR THE GOD OF ISRAEL
HEARETH NOT - NEITHER
DOTH HE SEE!"

48
"THE PEOPLE SHALL WORSHIP
THY GOLDEN GOD - AND
CALL THEE QUEEN!"

49
"BEHOLD THY HANDS! THOU
ART BECOME A LEPER -
UNCLEAN! UNCLEAN!"

50
"SAVE THY PEOPLE, I BESEECH
THEE! FOR THEY HAVE DONE
AN ABOMINATION - AND AARON
HATH MADE THEM NAKED UNTO
THEIR SHAME!"
		(Exodus 32:25)

51
"WOE TO THEE, O ISRAEL!
THOU ART UNDONE, FOR
THOU PROVOKEDST THY
GOD TO WRATH!"
	(Deuteronomy 9:7)

52
"YE HAVE MADE YOU GODS OF
GOLD - THEREFORE, YE ARE
NOT WORTHY TO RECEIVE
THE TABLETS OF THE ONE
GOD!"

53
"AND MOSES' ANGER WAXED HOT,
AND HE CAST THE TABLES OUT
OF HIS HANDS, AND BRAKE
THEM BENEATH THE MOUNT."
		(Exodus 32:19)

54
"CLEANSE ME, I PRAY THEE,
FOR I HAVE WORSHIPPED
IDOLS, AND BECOME A LEPER."

55
"AND ALL ISRAEL THAT WERE
ROUND ABOUT, FLED AT THE
CRY OF HIM, AND FELL UPON
THEIR FACES."
		(Numbers 16:34-45)

56
"THOU HAST BROUGHT
DESTRUCTION UPON US,
WITH THY GODS OF GOLD!"

57
"- and there fell of
the children of Israel
that day, about three
thousand men."
		(Exodus 32:28)

58
"All that's the bunk, Mother!
The Ten Commandments were
all right for a lot of dead
ones - but that sort of
stuff was buried with Queen
Victoria!"

59
"I'd like your Ten Command-
ments better, if they
could mend this sole
- instead of the one
Mom's worried about!"

60
"If you're setting a pair of
shoes above your God,
Dan McTavish - you'll get
just what the Children of
Israel got, when they wor-
shipped the Golden Calf!"

61
"I'm a little hazy on the
Golden Calf, Mom - but
when the Golden Eagle
on this little $5.00 'sinker'
flaps his wings - papa
gets down and prays!"

62
"Nice Golden Eagle -
hatch lots of little
eagles, and bring them
all to Papa!"

63
 "Laugh at the Ten
Commandments all you
want, Danny - but they
pack an awful wallop!"

64
"Hire a hall, Johnny,
and tell them all
about it!"

65
"Oh forget it! How do I
know there is a God?
And as for the Ten
Commandments, they never
got me anything, and they
can go plumb to -- !"

66
"You can't blaspheme God
in this house! You must
ask His forgiveness -
or leave!"

67
"You're holding a Cross
in your hand, Mom
- but you're using it
like a Whip!"

68
"I'll apologize to you,
Mom, but not to God
- because I don't
believe there is one!"

69
 Fortune plays no
    favorites.
 And MARY LEIGH, alone
and "broke" finds she
has to choose between
hunger and the "sheiks".

70
"I beat it from home,
because I'm fed up on a
lot of religious stuff that's
so cold - I came out
into the rain to get warm!"

71
"Come on back, Kid
- you forgot the
pickle!"

72
"I tink dere was a
murder in Dugan's
lunch wagon!"

73
"I haven't eaten since
yesterday! And as I
was passing Dugan's lunch
wagon - a hot dog ran
out and bit me!"

74
"This kid hasn't a cent
in the world, Mom! Won't
you invite her to stay
for supper, and spend
the night with us?"

75
"Wait for me, while
I get my coat. Mom
threw me out tonight,
so I won't be long!"

76
"Before you leave home,
Danny - let me show
you what the storm
blew in!"

77
"Nobody believes in
these Commandment things
nowadays - and I think
Elinor Glyn's a lot more
interesting!"

78
"John, you and the
young lady may
come to supper."

79
"Come on, Danny
- tell Mom you're
sorry!"

80
"- and bless the Stranger,
within our gates - and
guide her feet in the
straight and the narrow path!"

81
   Sunday Afternoon
      shows what an
astonishing effect laughing
Brown Eyes can have
upon a Household.

82
"Mary - I'm crazy about
you! Only, I haven't
got the nerve to tell
you what I'm thinking!"

83
"Why, Johnny - orange
blossoms mean a
wedding!"

84
"They're from a man
who's crazy about you
- but hasn't got the
nerve to speak!"

85
"He loves you, Mary, and
wants you to marry
him - but he doesn't
know if you care."

86
"I think he's just
wonderful!"

87
"Why didn't Danny
give it to me
himself?"

88
"Danny, I told Mary
that you didn't have
nerve enough to give it
to her - but she wouldn't
take it from me!"

89
"Please don't blame Dan,
Mrs. McTavish - it was
my fault! I asked him
to put on the dance
records!"

90
"Mother - there's nothing
anywhere in that Book,
against having a little
wholesome fun on Sunday!"

91
"If my own sons prefer
to break the Sabbath with
an Unbeliever - rather
than to keep it with me
- it's time for me to go!"

92
"Mrs. McTavish, this is your
home, and I've no right
to make you unhappy.
If anybody goes, it will
be me."

93
"Mary and I are going
to be married right now!
And we're going to live
our own life, in our own
heathen way!"

94
"You've been wonderful,
Johnny! And when you
fall in love some day
- promise you won't
forget me."

95
"Johnny, we're going to LIVE!
We'll break all ten of your
old Commandments, and
we'll finish rich and power-
ful - with the world at
our feet!"

96
"You'll keep your Ten
Commandments, Johnny,
and you'll finish just
where you are - a poor
carpenter!"

97
"I guess being a carpenter,
is just about all I'm
good for!"

98
"John dear - some mighty
fine men have been
carpenters!"

99
At the end of Three Years
   - Dan has become the
most successful young building
contractor in the state.
But for every building he puts
up - he tears down a part of his
soul.
While John, still true to his
code, is just a Carpenter.

100
"This time, we're going to take
a chance on a leaner 'mix'
- one of cement to twelve
of sand and rock. With a
broad-minded building inspector
like yourself on the job - it's
a cinch!"

101
"Listen Boy - 'every day
in every way', we're getting
slicker and slicker!
But we're building this church
on filled ground - and I
tell you it isn't safe!"

102
"Johnny dear, I'm sorry
that after three years,
I still have to decorate
you with a 'bachelor's
button'!"

103
"We'll make my brother
boss-carpenter of the
new church building.
Like Caesar's wife, he's
'above reproach'!"

104
"Mother sent you her
picture, Danny, for
your new apartment."

105
"Well - where are
you going to hang
it?"

106
"It was great news to
Mother, that you'd
landed the contract
for the church!"

107
"Johnny - I'm going
to make you boss-
carpenter on this new
job."

108
"I've heard some nasty
rumors, Dan - about
your smuggling in the
jute for your plaster."

109
"There are two
ways of wearing
it, Danny!"

110
"I want you to take this
job, John, because I'll pay
you enough money, to
buy Mother some of the
things that she refuses to
accept from me."

111
"While you're so earnest
about your Ten Command-
ments, isn't there one
which says something about
- 'coveting your brother's
wife'?"

112
"You're right, Dan, I do
love Mary. But I won't
forget that she is your
wife - I hope YOU won't
forget it either!"

113
    Danny may have fooled
       the U.S. Customs -
but there's more than one
way of paying duty.
And the bales of his jute, on
their long journey from Calcutta,
have passed the Leper Island
of Molokai.

114
    Dan "flourishes like a
        green Bay-Tree".
  And eight months later,
his beautiful Church with
its walls of rotten concrete
- stands a monument to
his defiance of God's law.

115
    In the little con-
     tractor's office
- beneath the towering
walls - Dan reaps the
reward of his cleverness.

116
"Miss Sally Lung
is here, Sir."

117
"Go easy, Son! This Sally
Lung is half French, and
half Chinese.
The combination of French
perfume and Oriental incense
is more dangerous than nitro-
glycerine!"

118
"For luncheon today, in the
home of Sally Lung -
is prepared the Chinese
Love-Drink 'Ny-gar-pay' -
distilled from a thousand
Lotus flowers!"

119
"Will you please tell
my husband, I have
brought his luncheon?"

120
"I'm very sorry, but Mr.
McTavish left here a
few minutes ago - to
take luncheon with some
bankers!"

121
"Don't come up! It's
nineteen dizzy flights
- and awfully windy!"

122
"I'll take the Air
 Line Short Cut!"

123
"You little devil - are
you trying to give
me heart failure?"

124
"You can't send me down
- when I've brought
you a wonderful lunch!
Besides, this is probably
the nearest to Heaven I'll
ever get!"

125
"Well, he has one
Commandment left
- I don't think he's
killed anybody yet!"

126
"It might have been
less dangerous, John
- to let me fall!"

127
"Mary - I want
you to get off
here, quick!"

128
"Redding, if all the rest
of the concrete is as
rotten as this section
- work on this church is
going to stop right now!"

129
"Mrs. McTavish, somebody's been
feeding Angel-Face here, red
meat!
If you know where Dan is,
get him quick - before his
loving brother gets us all in
the papers!"

130
"Young man - minding
your own business,
pays very big divi-
dends!"

131
"Sweet Papa!"

132
     The thunder of God
       is not always in
the sky - it may, some-
times, be in the rumble
of heavy sand trucks,
over a cobbled street.

133
"I want the truth about
this concrete, McQuire
- how much cement
are you putting in the
'mix'?"

134
"About One to Twelve!
I was told to double up
on the sand - and
cut down on the cement."

135
"Tell Kelley to call the
men off the scaffolding
- and to allow no
one inside the building!"

136
"I'm sure it's all right
for me to go in -
I'm Mrs. McTavish,
Dan's Mother!"

137
"Thank God you've
come! That 'angel'
brother of yours, is
raising hell!"

138
"You can't get away with
it, Dan! You're stealing
thousands on your
concrete - and some-
thing's going to smash!"

139
"Don't be a fool, Mary! I
can't make enough money,
without cutting on some of
the specifications.
And Brother John isn't
interested in concrete - he's
trying to ruin me - to get you!"

140
"Danny, you've got to
make this concrete right!
You can't break every
law of God and Man
and get away with it!"

141
"I told you I'd break the Ten
Commandments - and look
what I've got for it, SUCCESS!
That's all that counts!
I'm sorry if your God doesn't
like it - but this is my
party, not His!"

142
"The South wall's
fallen - they say an
old woman was under-
neath!"

143
"There's nothing to
do - it's just a
matter of minutes!"

144
"Johnny, dear -
I want to talk to
Dan - alone."

145
"Oh, Mom, don't die -
or it'll be me that's
killed you!
I built these walls - and
they're made of rotten
concrete!"

146
"It's your hair, Danny, my
own little Boy! Whatever
you've done, is all my fault
I taught you to fear God,
instead of to love Him -
and LOVE is all that counts!"

147
"Danny's hair - when
   he was a baby."

148
   Fighting with his
    back against the
wall - Dan begins to
realize, that if you break
the Ten Commandments -
they will break you.

149
"This little scandal sheet
is hot after us! It'll
take $25,000 to buy it
- but it's got to be
done!"

150
"Don't be an idiot! That's
a fine way out for you -
but you're not going to
leave me holding the sack.
If I go to prison - I
want company!"

151
"Get it your own way,
Son! Only GET it -
or you and I will change
our names to numbers!"

152
The Red Commandment.

153
"I'm in trouble, Sally -
and you're a real friend!
I've got to have money
- and I've got to
have it quick!"

154
"I made you some pretty
good presents, when
I had the dough -
didn't I?"

155
"Poor Sally would
catch cold, without
her pearls!"

156
"Now, listen - I've
got to have those
pearls!"

157
"Now get this -
I'm through with you
for good!"

158
"You're not through
with me! You'll never
be through with me!"

159
"Something tells me, that
you're going to pay
heavy duty on those bales
of jute - which you
sneaked in from Calcutta!"

160
"Goodbye, Danny!"

161
"Danny, dear - I'll
tell the Devil, you
won't be far behind!"

162
  But there is no place
where a Man may hide
from his Conscience.

163
"Oh, Mommy - I wish
I'd listened to you -
if I could only start
all over again!"

164
"Ship me somewhere
        East of Suez -
Where the best is
        like the worst!
Where there ar'n't no
    Ten Commandments -
An' a man can
         raise a thirst!"

165
"Mary - I've just
killed that Woman!"

166
"Don't think you're going
to John - because you
won't dare! You're
branded, the same as I
am - and where I go,
my Wife goes with me!"

167
"If you touch me
- I'll kill you!"

168
"Didn't I hear you
talking to someone?"

169
"Goodbye, dear -
we'll have tea
tomorrow."

170
"I have a warrant for
your husband on a
charge of murder!
We'll wait downstairs."

171
"Mary, you've been
wonderful - and I'm
rotten all through!
If I believed in a God -
I'd ask Him to bless you!"

172
"I'll try for Mexico
in the motor boat!
Forget me, Mary, and
if you can - forgive
me!"

173
"She's runnin' a pretty
heavy sea, Boss!
You've picked some
night for a joy-ride!"

174
"It's the end of every-
thing for me, John
- I'm going where I
can find peace!"

175
"Don't touch me -
I'm branded!"

176
"You're not branded
with anything -
but FEAR!"

177
"Mary, there is only
one man who can
help you - a Man
you have forgotten!"

178
"For what is a man
profited, if he shall
gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?"
	(Matthew 16:26)

179
"'And behold, there
came to Him a
leper, and worshipped
Him.'"

180
"Lord - if Thou
wilt, Thou canst
make me clean!"

181
"I WILL - BE THOU
   MADE CLEAN"

182
  "Why, John - in
the light, it's gone!"

183
"Yes - in the LIGHT
- it's gone!"
