Fearing lynch law, McVane
makes for the desert.

"He's only got ten minutes start.
I am going after him alone.
Collect a horse and follow
our trail immediately."

Mercedes decides to take a
desperate chance to save Luke
McVane.

Mercedes makes a false trail
to mislead the posse.

The Sheriff's horse being a
faster and fresher mount, rapidly
overhauls the fugitive.

The scheme successful.

The deputy and his posse
realize that they have
taken the wrong trail.

Luke determines to take
him to his desert cabin,
not having the heart to
leave the Sheriff behind
to perish in the desert.
