Collect a horse and follow our trail immediately." 11 Mercedes decides to take a desperate chance to save Luke McVane. 12 Mercedes makes a false trail to mislead the posse. 13 The Sheriff's horse being a faster and fresher mount, rapidly overhauls the fugitive. 14 The scheme successful. 15 The deputy and his posse realize that they have taken the wrong trail. 16 Luke determines to take him to his desert cabin, not having the heart to leave the Sheriff behind to perish in the desert. 17 Sunset.
