1 "Keep your shirt on! Our leading lady hasn't shown up yet!" 2 "This nervous tension will positively slay me!" 3 "Where's your boots?" 4 VIOLET - - The drudge of the troupe...who also played parts, like Nothing in "Much Ado About Nothing". ... Beatrice Lillie 5 "Do you think Mr. Wainwright would let me play the leading part? I know every line of it!" 6 "You've got to start or I'll give the people their money back!" 7 "I can play the part of Dolores Du Barry...like it was never played before!" 8 "Please, Mr. Wainwright! I'll turn out to be a genius...honest I will!" 9 "Patience, folks! It won't be long now before 'Flaming Women' gets to flamin'!" 10 "I've been getting acquainted with some real beer." 11 "My heart bleeds for little Dolores Du Barry. I fear the master means her no good!" 12 Act three. Ten years later...and the audience is still conscious. 13 "It's little Dolores Du Barry! She's disguised now as a vampire.... to save the man she loves!" 14 "Ten o'clock! My lover is saved!" 15 "Step on it! Train's leaving!" 16 Among the very few places fortunate enough to have escaped "Flaming Women" was the town of East Farnham. 17 "Sorry to see you leaving town, Jim. Hope you're not in any trouble." 18 "What kind of a car is this?" 19 "Are you an actress?" 20 "I was rehearsing the part of the famous vampire in 'Flaming Women'." 21 "It's an awfully wonderful part. How Sarah Bernhardt would loved to have played it!" 22 "I always wanted to meet an actress." 23 "How dare you! I've never given you any encouragement!" 24 The following morning found Jasper Junction inflicted with 'Flaming Women'. 25 "No argument! You're fired!" 26 "I met the star of this show last night." 27 "Fine state of affairs when us actresses have to do the work of you servants!" 28 "Run along, my man! Scrub the floors.... wash the dishes...and make it snappy!" 29 "Send this telegram as soon as you finish cleaning up." 30 "I was just rehearsing the maid's part. Really, I'm quite good in maids' parts." 31 "But, I'll bet you're best as that vampire." 32 "You're right! And some day I'll play that vampire part. It's the one big chance I'm waiting for." 33 "Going anywhere in particular?" 34 "No....I'm just looking around for a job somewhere." 35 "Here's a job you might get." 36 "Here's a young man who would like to apply for that job." 37 "Any experience?" 38 "I won a prize in elocution at high school." 39 "Please give him a trial. I'll take him and learn him the death scene from 'Shattered Hearts'." 40 "Why don't you give him a try-out at rehearsal this afternoon?" 41 "This is a romantic place to rehearse." 42 "Now....I'm your sweet- heart and you're my dying lover." 43 "Now I'll make my entrance. Watch closely!" 44 "Don't die, Ethelbert! Light of my life.... don't go out!" 45 Afternoon rehearsal. 46 "It's the death scene from 'Shattered Hearts' I'll be his dying sweetheart." 47 "She's dying! She's dying! Can't you cry?" 48 "The kid certainly knows his onions!" 49 "Young fellow, I'm going to give you a chance." 50 So Jimmy became a "trouper". And, back in East Farnham, he became a memory.... cherished only by the girl he left behind. 51 "My daughter, forget Jimmy and accept Jesse Watson. There's an ideal husband." 52 Jesse Watson, cashier of the East Farnham Bank. 53 "Watson, I'm in a jam. You still owe me a thousand....and I want it!" 54 "When Jimmy Marsh beat it from town everybody thought he swiped five thousand from this bank, didn't they?" 55 "Wasn't it a coincidence that you paid me a five thousand dollar gambling debt that same night?" 56 "Listen, Powell....the fact that Jimmy ran away is accepted as conclusive proof of his guilt!" 57 "I can't ever believe Jimmy did anything wrong, Father." 58 "Dinner's ready!" 59 "Beans again! What is this troupe...the Boston Opera Company?" 60 "Come on with that bread!" 61 "Get me a napkin -- quick!" 62 "Jim, I've decided to give you a chance to play the villain in 'Flaming Women'!" 63 "Speaking of villains, reminds me of a story! When I played with Edwin Booth - -" 64 "- and when I played East Lynne - -" 65 The first time a girl's in love....all the world's a song. After that it becomes a phonographic record. 66 "I love you, I love you, I love you, You are the ordeal of my dreams -" 67 "We're not going to play this town, are we?" 68 "I can't appear in this town...it's impossible!" 69 "I worked in the bank here once, and....oh, well, there was some trouble - -" 70 "Whatever it was, Jimmy, I know you were innocent." 71 "Leave it to me, Jimmy. I'll fix it so you won't have to appear here." 72 "I'll get Anna to double for me as the maid, and then - -" 73 That night East Farnham faced the agony of "Flaming Women". 74 "This is an important part. You're sure you'll make a good actor?" 75 "I ought to...I'm the best plumber in town!" 76 "My heart bleeds for little Dolores Du Barry. I fear the master means her no good." 77 "I can look like a man! I'll play his part!" 78 "So-ho, me proud beauty! At last we meet face to face!" 79 "Mark you, Dolores Du Barry....I have you in my fiendish clutches!" 80 "Say your prayers, Jack Merriweather! You're going to....going to -" 81 "-- die the death of a dirty dog!" 82 "-- die the dog of a dirty death!" 83 "Very well! I go....but I shall return!" 84 "You're wanted at headquarters, Jack Merriweather!" 85 "Hey, Jerry!" 86 "It's Jimmy Marsh! Let's tell the gang he's back!" 87 "Flaming Women" flamed, flickered and smouldered through two acts...and was gradually dying out. 88 "I may not be so good as a villain...but wait till I get a chance to play that vampire part!" 89 "You can't bluff me! Who told you Jimmy's here?" 90 "Maybe when you see him you'll pay that thousand dollars you owe me!" 91 "Now I'll take that thousand!" 92 "You know mighty well I have enough evidence to clear Jimmy Marsh!" 93 "Wait here...I'll be back with the money in ten minutes." 94 "Dolores Du Barry!" 95 "He mustn't know me! I pretended to faint so he would carry me up here!" 96 "If I can detain him for an hour, my loved one will be saved!" 97 "I feel so dizzy! Where am I?" 98 "I'd better call a doctor!" 99 "Perhaps it isn't dizziness.... it may be love!" 100 "I've a warrant for Tod Powell. Haven't seen him, have you?" 101 "Lord Throckmorton just telephoned he is sending over a very important message." 102 "That other fellow will be right back. Give him this note." 103 "Ten o'clock! My lover is saved!" 104 "If I can detain him for an hour, my loved one will be saved!" 105 "Give me some of that incense!" 106 "I feel so dizzy. Where are I?" 107 "I'd better call a doctor!" 108 "Perhaps it isn't dizziness.... it may be love!" 109 "I said ... 'it may be love!'" 110 "Yes...yes...I'm sure it's love!" 111 "He says he won't pay the money!" 112 "Twelve o'clock! My lover is saved!" 113 "-- and Jimmy Marsh can verify it! He's down at the station in the show car." 114 "I've got wonderful news for Jimmy! He's waiting for me at the show car!" 115 "Jimmy, I've always believed in you." 116 "You just bet I'm going to stay here!" 117 "Oh, Jimmy, about that trouble of yours at the bank - -" 118 "Don't worry about that, Vi....I've got some evidence that will clear up everything." 119 "I'm going to stay here, Vi...and make good in the banking business." 120 "- and you'll be making a great name for yourself in the theatre." 121 "That's your life, isn't it?" 122 "Gee, Vi, I sure hope you get a chance to play that vampire part some day."Home
