A young Indian warrior went out to sea with his new made canoe. Suddenly a wave tipped his canoe over. The warrior became frightened because when he opened his eyes under the clear water he could only see sand. The warrior was very frightened by the sand because he had never seen a place that didn't contain life. Now the warrior was a man who was very brave and strong and loved to go out in his canoe and watch the life around him. During the day, he would sit and watch the birds fly over the ocean, and at night he would sit and watch the stars and listen to the life on the land. When the warrior saw that the bottom of the ocean was barren, he was deeply saddened that such beautiful, blue water did not have life.
So he went back to his village and told his sister of what he had seen. The Indian maiden, like her brother also enjoyed life and the beauty it contained. She would spend the day planting flowers and watching them and the animals around her grow. She had always thought the sea was a special, beautiful place, but she had not realized it contained no life.
Upset about what she heard she decided to go out with her brother the next day and give the ocean the gifts of flowers and other plants. That night she gathered her most beautiful flowers and most precious plants, that she had grown from seeds and piled all of them in the canoe to prepare for the voyage the next day.
He took his sister along because he knew how much she loved the sea and how much she wanted to see life and beauty in it. They dropped the plants and flowers down to teh ocean floor and hoped that they might grow and create a beautiful landscape on the sea floor, similar to the landscape of their tribal village.
