| Jesus Who? - PAGE 2 BEN. Yeah, okay, so he was the son of God, too. So that makes it easier to believe what he said, hes got great, what do you call, credentials. GWEN. Thats not the point. I mean, its nice that he shared his wisdom with us, but even if he never said anything, even if no one ever wrote down all the stuff he did, hes still the only one worthy of the sacrifice. BEN. Sacrifice? Oh, the crucifixion. Yeah, hey no offense, but why are people always dwelling on that, its so depressing. GWEN. Its important. Its the only way that we could be free. BEN. Yeah, well at least it was no big deal for him, right? I mean he was God right, he could perform all those miracles? It probably didnt hurt at all. GWEN. If it didnt hurt, the sacrifice wouldnt have meant anything. He was God but he was also a man. Thats what makes him special. Thats whats so mysterious about him. He could perform miracles but he also felt pain. When his friend Lazarus died, he knew he could raise him from the dead, but still, he cried because he was so sad. BEN. Yeah, and when he prayed at, what do you call, Gethsemene, and he knew he was going to die, he was scared and he asked God if he wanted to change his mind. GWEN. And when he was up on the cross, he was in so much pain, he thought God had totally forsaken him. He really did suffer. And he did it for us. BEN. Well, he shouldnt have. I never asked him to do it. GWEN. You didnt ask him to but you needed him to. We all needed it. It was the one and only way to save us from death. If there was any other way, God would have done it. Why else would God do such a painful thing? There must have been no other way. BEN. Well it probably wasnt that painful for God. I mean, he knew how it was going to turn out, you know, Jesus returned from the dead, and hes up there sitting next to God and everythings great. He knew it had a happy ending. GWEN. You remember when we sent our daughter to school for the first time? How much she cried, how scared she was? We knew it would turn out okay, but still, seeing her cry, begging us to take her home BEN. Yeah, that was tough. Boy, if there was any way I couldve taken her pain away but she had to go through it. GWEN. Yeah. And that was nothing. God sent the only son he had to be tortured and killed. You dont think that was painful for him? BEN. Well why would he go and do a thing like that for? GWEN. John 3:16. BEN. He loves us that much. Go figure. GWEN. So are you going to take your granddaughter for a walk or are you going to stand there like a lump? BEN. Huh? Oh, yeah, sure. You know, maybe its not such a bad idea to go over to church this Sunday. I guess I got a few questions of my own. GWEN. Good idea. BEN. Hey, you think theyll have donuts there? (she looks at him) Just asking. |
