Characters:
BEN - An older man from Brooklyn or Queens
GWEN - An older woman from Brooklyn or Queens

(The scene opens with GWEN sitting in a chair crying. BEN enters.)

BEN. Oh there you are. I thought you was making lunch. Whats the matter with you?

GWEN. Im watching my soap. How can she stay with him? Hes such a monster.

BEN. Twenty years you watch this program, you cry every time, and you never have a hanky ready. (hands her one) Alright, here you go. Enough with the waterworks. What am I gonna do with you, huh? (pause) Wheres your granddaughter?

GWEN. Shes getting dressed. I told her youd take her out to Central Park.

BEN. Okay. You coming?

GWEN. I was going to polish the silver. Oh, and Ill give you a little warning. Shes been very inquisitive lately. Shes asking a lot of questions, especially about God and Jesus.

BEN. Hey, thats no problem. I know all about God and Jesus. I was raised in the church.

GWEN. Uh huh. Well maybe we should just take her to church this Sunday.

BEN. This Sunday? Why are we going this Sunday? Were going next week for Easter. You know they aint going to say anything big this week, theyre saving all the good stuff for Easter. Hey, are they going to have those donuts like they did last year? Boy, those were good.

GWEN. You know, it wouldnt kill you to go to church more than twice a year. Shes got some important questions on her mind, it would be nice if she could ask someone that knows what hes talking about.

BEN. Very funny. It just so happens, in my Sunday school class, I got an award for memorizing the most Bible verses. John 3:16ForGodsolovedtheworldhegavehisonlybegottensonthat- whosoeverbelievethinhimshallnotperishbuthaveeverlastinglife.

GWEN. Do you have any idea what you just said?

BEN. (pause) Not a clue. What did I say?

GWEN. Men. God loved us all so much, that even though he only had one son, he gave him up as a sacrifice, so that we could live forever.

BEN. Whatever. All the Bible verses, all that book stuff, thats all just technical. I know who the real Jesus is. Ive seen five or six movies about him.

GWEN. Oh yeah? Who is he?

BEN. Jesus was the greatest religious philosopher in history. He was a brilliant politician, soldier, peacemaker, storyteller did I mention religious philosopher?

GWEN. Yeah.

BEN. Okay. Thats who he is.

GWEN. Ben Parker. And you call yourself a Christian man.

BEN. What.

GWEN. Anybody couldve been those things. Confucius, Buddha

BEN. Ben Franklin

GWEN. Ben Franklin?

BEN. Ben Franklin is extremely underrated.

GWEN. Sure. Anyway, even in the time of Jesus, John the Baptist was more popular. A lot of people thought he was the messiah. But it was right there in front of John the Baptist, that God announced it for everybody and his Aunt Mary to hear, You are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. And he wasnt talking to John the Baptist, and he wasnt talking to Buddha, he was talking to Jesus, the one and only son of God.
