Joseph Samuel Greene was born on February 12, 1884 in Eure, NC to Anderson Greene and Martha J. Eure. Sam, as he was known, had one brother, James and two sisters, Penny and Mary "Mae" Levinia. Penny died as a teenager and is buried at Eure Christian Cemetery in Eure, NC. Sam married Ella Mae Umphlett, the daughter of William David Umphlett and Nancy Landing.
Sam and Ella lived their lives in the Eure area. Sam was a farmer and Ella tended the house and raised their four children: Nellie Ruth, Ellmaree, Joseph Haywood, and Clatta Beulah.
Ella died on December 5, 1953 and was buried by her parents at Cool Spring Baptist Cemetery in Eure, NC. Sam died September 13, 1974 and was buried beside his wife.
Nellie Ruth Greene - was born in August of 1907. She went to school in the Eure area where she made lifelong friends. She worked at the Eure and Roduco Post Offices and different times. She was married once to Roscoe Hill. He was the father of one of her childhood friends and thirty years her senior. She called him "Mr. Hill" until the day she died. Nellie Ruth never had children of her own, instead she surrounded herself by her many neices and nephews. Nellie Ruth died in July, 2004.
