Nolum were discovered by Henry H. Nolum, the captain of the fishing boat Whydda.
It was one average, cold fishing trip to the South Pole in search of a specific type of fish, which migrated to this part of the world during the later months of the year. Nolum and his crew had been at sea for several months straight now, so they were tired, cold and desperately wanted to get back to their families.
Just as the crew were finishing up with the fishing for the season and were about to turn homeward once more, a large school of fish rose from the depths of the frozen waters in a frantic rush. The fish were traveling at such a fast rate that when they hit the water surface, some were launched by the momentum into the air and some onto the boat itself.
This must be my lucky day Thought the Captain as more and more fish landed on the deck in a desperate bid to avoid capture of what ever it was that was chasing them from their resting spots.
Suddenly a faint whale-song like nose could be heard, and was getting louder with every passing moment, as the sound got louder, the fish got more and more frantic.
Suddenly, with a great force a large whale broke through the water's surface. Pushing the great beast clean out of the water, landing it in the middle of the boat. This whale looked nothing like any of the whales Nolum had ever seen before. It had three blow holes, a strange red and grey colouration and a mouth much like a sea cow.
The Strange whale was so heavy that after the few moments that it took for Nolum to take in the strange creature, the small fishing boat broke in half and the great beast plunged into the depths once again.
The only thing that was recovered by the SES after the incident was Nolum's log, which recounted what happened.
Authorities sent out a search to find the strange whale like creature that the boat log had described. Eventually, they found the beasts described and captured them. Behavioral tests and studies proved them to be safe and friendly enough to be adopted out to people to watch over their islands and the water dwelling ponies.
