The Local Digital Divide?

What is the Digital Divide? There is much talk these days about bridging the digital divide. This normally refers to the Third World countries catching up with the advanced world as far as the use of Information Technology is concerned for the advancement of mankind.

I guess it all has to do with the world fast becoming a global village.

This places on each and everyone a huge responsibility of making sure that this village of ours is protected so that it can also in turn offer us protection.

It calls for an understanding the way of live of the populace of this global village so that, like the human body, we can all work in tandem to discharge this sacred obligation of ours.

Thank God we do not have to cross oceans and climb mountains to reach the other side to learn about the way of live of our fellow brothers and sisters.

The Internet is our saviour.

BUT

  • In the situation where majority of our rural poor are finding it difficult to have three square meals a day.
  • In the situation where Internet access remains a mirage to many a people in this global village of ours.
  • In the situation where the use of Information Technology in the lives of the many poor is but a distant dream
  • In a such a situation how do we build bridges across the digital divide so that we can all understand each other and thus be able to live in unison and each discharge his/her duty?

Well I say let's start building bailey bridges across the local divides first then we can start talking about bridging the bigger digital divide.

  • Until the rural poor are able to factor the use of the Computer and Internet in their day to day activities
  • Until Internet access is made accessible to many more people locally

Bridging the digital divide will forever remain a shadow we will be forever chasing.

What do you think?
