Dubai is the Middle East's prime destination for luxury tourism and shopping, with some of the highest growth rates in the world. Dubai is the quintessential home of sand, sun and shopping. Dubai was a small coastal village best known in the region for its trading, fishing and pearling settlements. Dubai was taken over around 1830 by a branch of the Bani Yas tribe from the Liwa oasis led by the Maktoum family who still rule the emirate today. Dubai is one of the seven sheikhdoms that constitute the UAE, and by universal acclaim, the emirate of Dubai owes much to the vision of the late Shekh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum who turned a desert into a high-tech city.

was more interested in Trade and Warfare and pursued liberal policies.
This was a magnet for Indian and Iranian traders to settle there in preference
to other sheikhdoms. Its foundation as an entrepot centre was laid at
that time. A place originally known for pearling and fishing is a mad
medley of contradictions and brashness. The discovery and exploitation
of oil in the fifties, particularly in the neighbouring sheikhdom of
Abu Dhabi, gave wings to dreams. |
