| Kim pleads guilty to drug charge - Posted: 01/01/2004 Eminem 's ex-wife, Kimberly Mathers, has pleaded guilty to a drug charge and a driving offense as part of an agreement to resolve two drug cases, the prosecutor's office said. Mathers, who's been the subject of some of the rapper's songs, appeared Thursday before Circuit Court Judge Edward A. Servitto and entered the pleas to a charge of possessing 25 grams or less of cocaine and failing to give adequate space to an emergency vehicle. The charges came from a June traffic stop in St. Clair Shores. A third charge of driving with a suspended license will be dropped and a charge of maintaining a drug house, from a Warren hotel party in September where police confiscated marijuana and Ecstasy, will be dismissed, said David Portuesi, chief of the drug crimes unit for the Macomb County prosecutor's office. "Probation is an outcome that's recommended here within the state guidelines," Portuesi told The Macomb Daily for Friday's editions. While the St. Clair Shores case was pending, the 28-year-old Mathers failed to appear in court. On Nov. 1, she broke or removed an electronic tether designed to monitor her whereabouts. Mathers turned herself in later that month. Portuesi said the judge has removed the tether and house arrest as conditions of Mathers' bond. Defense attorney Michael Sinutko asked for Mathers to get consideration under a legal provision where offenders convicted of their first drug crime can abide by probation or other terms and get their convictions sealed or expunged. Servitto likely will rule on the request at Mathers' Jan. 21 sentencing. Album leaks investigated by Interscope - Posted: 01/12/03 Interscope is conducting an investigation into leaks surrounding music from Eminem's upcoming album. The rapper is recording his album in a Los Angeles recording studio and despite security precautions, three unfinished tracks have found their way to Internet auction site, Ebay. The recordings were being offered to the highest bidder. Ebay promptly canceled the auction, but the recordings have surfaced several times since being shut down. Security during the sessions has been tight and Eminem reportedly knows everyone that attends each session. Interscope is interviewing every person with access to the studio and considering a special "security team" to prevent further recordings from being leaked. There is no release date for Eminem's untitled album. Get Rich Part Two - Posted: 11/09/03 The first new material from 50 Cent will arrive at the end of the year with the G-Unit album, 'Beg For Mercy'. 50's G-Unit crew is made up of Lloyd Banks, Young Buck and the currently imprisoned Tony Yayo with all four sharing the microphone duties on the album. The Eminem and Dr Dre-signed star told MTV News that he is happy for the G-Unit release to be viewed by the public as the follow-up to his acclaimed debut, 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. "I had to work extra hard on this album," he said. "Now I'm content with them calling this my second album. I think its good enough." Production on the record comes from both of the business overlords, Dr Dre and Eminem, along with more underground names like Alchemist, Emil and DJ Twinz.Young Buck delivered the sales pitch, saying: "Basically what you got from 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' is the same thing you can look forward to on the G-Unit album or maybe more. We got a lot of stuff in store." Eminem Goes Willie Wonka - Posted: 04/09/03 Eminem is giving fans the opportunity to watch him record his new LP in a Willie Wonka-style golden ticket giveaway. To be in with a chance of winning, fans will need to buy the new album from Eminem protg Obie Trice - three of the first 500,000 copies will contain the winning tickets. "We were working on this album and trying to come up with the craziest idea possible to help promote it," explained Em. "Everybody's always doing the same sh*t with their records," said Trice. "'Buy my album, get a DVD, get a free poster, get a piece of my toilet seat'. F*ck that sh*t. When I was a kid I would have given a nut to win something like this." Trice, who has previously provided guest vocals on Eminem tracks including 'Drips' and 'Love Me', was signed to Shady Records after the rap superstar heard him freestyling through his car window. His debut album, 'Cheers', is released in the US on September 23."I'm just happy to be here," Trice told Rolling Stone. "A lot of people where I'm from, they didn't make it. I'm cheers-ing my first album." Eminem or 50 Cent? - Posted: 31/08/03 It's an epic battle for the ages teacher against student, friend against friend, brother against brother. Eminem and 50 Cent will go head-to-head in four categories at Thursday night's MTV Video Music Awards. Only time will tell how each man fares inside the brutal and often bloody VMA ring, but a look at how the two entertainers stack up in other arenas might shed some light on their odds of taking home a Moonman. Since it's often said that clothes make the man, we turned to an expert "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" fashion maven Carson Kressley to tell us whose style is award-worthy Only One VMA For Shady - Posted: 29/0/03 Eminem only won Best Video From a Film for the "8 Mile" anthem "Lose Yourself," but lost two others to 50 Cent. The mentor and protg made light of their competition, however, by joining each other at the podium for their acceptance speeches. The Detroit rapper appeared in a much better mood this year, even joking about his assault of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog last year before his introduction of 50 Cent's performance, which he did with another trash-talking puppet, Special Ed from "Crank Yankers." Ja Rule Adresses His Problems - Posted: 22/08/03 Ja Rule is preparing to release an EP addressing his troubles with Eminem and 50 Cent. The rappers have been engaged in a bitter war of words which has so far been restricted to mixtapes and media interviews. Ja Rule's 'Blood In My Eye' EP will bring the 'beef' into the shops. "Hip-Hop is at a fast and feverish pace right now with all the beefs and all the dramas and I'm at the helm of all of it," he told RapWorlds. "You ain't gonna' go nowhere without hearing my name and you ain't gonna' speak to 50 or Em without hollerin' at them about what I'm doing and it's the same with me. "I gotta' address certain subjects and there's not a better way to do it than with a rough crazy EP," he continued. "Just throw it out there. It's just rugged and raw and saying what I wanna say." The EP will not form part of Ja Rule's forthcoming instalment in his 'Venni Vetti Vecci' saga - his next album is expected to be a double LP. Eminem's Three In A Bed Romps - Posted: 21/08/03 If Eminem ever felt wife Kim Mathers spent too much time with her pals, it's nothing the three of them couldn't work out in bed. 'Kim has a sexual hold on him because of her bisexuality,' said uncle Todd Nelson, who (for some reason) has been keeping an eye on his nephew's sexual proclivities. 'She brings women home and puts them in bed with her, and when Marshal comes in he doesn't come home to just Kim - he comes home to whoever's in bed.' Kim's bisexuality is said to be a factor both in the childhood sweethearts' regular separations and reunions. 'It's every man's dream, right?' offers Nelson. Things may be over for good now, however, as Kim faces drugs charges which could see her away from the bedroom for up to five years. The white trash rapper's dysfunctional family has been spilling more salacious beans about the life of their lucrative relative in a new documentary, predictably titled The Real Slim Shady. Kim's pet name for the rapper is Rat Boy, according to her cousin Jennifer Watkins, because of the uncanny resemblance he bears to a drowned rat. 'Their marriage was straight out of Jerry Springer,' Watkins said. 'It was crazy and very abusive - a lot of anger, a lot of violence with a splash of love thrown in.' Eminem Comes Home With A Bang - Posted: 14/07/03 If you hadn't already, you can now crown him king of Detroit. Plowing through technical snags Saturday night to wage the year's most anticipated concert, Eminem dazzled a sold-out crowd of 46,000 at Ford Field. You wonder how many in the crowd stopped to realize that five years ago they could have seen Eminem perform in the intimacy of St. Andrew's Hall a few blocks away. But Marshall Mathers wasn't a superstar back then. Saturday night he was: 90 minutes, 27 songs, and a poised, confident strike at the mike. It was the grandest hip-hop spectacle the city's ever witnessed. On a mammoth stage sporting the same colorful scenery from last year's Eminem Show tour -- a carnival set that comes complete with a Ferris wheel -- the rapper commanded the stage, joined for most of the show by longtime partner Proof. Eminem dipped sparingly into his 1999 debut album, building most of his set list with material from "The Marshall Mathers LP" and "The Eminem Show." The show opened with "Square Dance" and closed with an anticlimactic encore that included "Rap Game," one of several appearances by Eminem cronies D12 and Obie Trice. Often rapping atop his own prerecorded vocals, presumably to lend bulk to the attack, he scored big when he went with his heavier material, songs like "Kill You" and "The Way I Am." For the ready-to-party crowd -- which was overwhelmingly white -- it was a sing-along kind of night, with audience chants filling out songs like "White America" and "Cleaning Out My Closet," which found 46,000 people dissing Eminem's mom out loud. As it did when the Rolling Stones performed in October, Ford Field proved its muster as a concert venue. The sound was consistently crisp and strong, and probably about as good as you could ask of a big stadium hosting booming hip-hop rhythms. Three years ago this week, Eminem's tour got in trouble with Detroit's mayor when it sought to play a video deemed too graphic by city staff. Saturday night, Detroit's new mayor was in the video that opened Eminem's show. We won't spoil the surprise for Sunday's concertgoers -- check Monday's Free Press for details -- but suffice it to say Kwame Kilpatrick lives up to his billing as America's hip-hop mayor. It couldn't have been good for Eminem's nerves when the video screens went blank midway through the clip, leaving a restless and confused audience. After several minutes of downtime -- with flashlights frantic at the side-stage production board -- the video started back up, and the show was on. That was just one of a series of miscues throughout the night. The sound dropped out more than once, and Eminem's vocals were sporadically mixed, often buried under the beats. That's the good thing about second chances, which the rapper will get when he reprises the show at Ford Field Sunday night. Still, when everything clicked, it soared. Eminem's big homecoming wasn't a standard sloppy hip-hop gig -- it was a bona fide production, with state of the art staging, lights and video. Rapper 50 Cent, the year's biggest new breakout star and a Shady Records artist, preceded Eminem with a set that showed how much he's grown onstage since his State Theatre appearance here in February. A summer of touring has clearly done him some good. Before a backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, the New York rapper dished up a 45-minute show with the same high-tech feel of Eminem's set, with video integrated wholesale into the onstage performance. The anthem "In Da Club" and loping "High All the Time" topped his own 13-song set list; 50 Cent later returned to join Eminem onstage for a loose romp through "Patiently Waiting" from his album "Get Rich or Die Tryin'". In a last-minute switch in billing, Missy Elliott was placed into the opening slot, a move that turned out to be a wise one. Elliott's set would have benefitted from more beats and less bumbling around -- the low point came when she stopped the music to toss autographed sneakers to the crowd. R&B vocalist Monica made a surprise appearance to sing "So Gone," but Elliott herself was a non-factor during the half-hour set. With daylight still pouring through Ford Field's windows, it felt like the show still hadn't quite started, and with Elliott doing just about everything but actually performing music for the crowd, that might as well have been the case. She's a genius in the studio, but Missy Elliott could stand some lessons in showmanship from her headlining partners. - Brian McCollum Eminem Buys News House - Posted: 10/07/03 ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Rapper Eminem has bought a 29-room, 15,000-square-foot mansion last owned by former Kmart Corp. chairman Chuck Conaway. Eminem, born Marshall Mathers III, paid nearly $4.8 million for the home, which has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, heated marble floors and Honduras mahogany paneling. It is located on six acres near Rochester Hills in northeast Oakland County, nearly 20 miles from Detroit and the neighboring blue-collar suburbs where Eminem grew up Eminem to switch to ballads? The Daily Star reports that Eminem wants to be taken seriously as a singer, say sources, and he'll be swapping his gangster lyrics for soppy ballads. "He wants to be taken seriously as a singer and as an actor," an insider revealed, claiming the rapper is set to remake vintage songs from the '50s and '60s. "From 'Moon River' to 'Puff the Magic Dragon', Eminem is reworking the classics to his style. If you thought he was shocking before, wait until this album comes out." Shady Talks About Future - Posted: 09/07/03 Billboard.com spoke with songwriter Luis Resto, who talked about working with Eminem on his new album, and records for his Shady Records acts D12 and Obie Trice. "[He] and I work together every day," Resto said. "A lot of the time we're writing for all three projects. You go in and you're jamming, doing music, and it gets spread here and there. Some stuff goes to Em, some to Obie and some to other artists. Kim pleads not guilty - Posted: 03/07/03 ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. - The former wife of Grammy-winning rapper Eminem pleaded innocent Tuesday to a drug charge and two driving violations. Kimberly Mathers is accused of possession of up to 25 grams of cocaine, driving with a suspended license and unsafe driving near a stopped emergency vehicle. The drug charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. Mathers is free after posting 10 percent of a $7,500 bond. She must undergo drug screening every other week. Police say a St. Clair Shores officer who stopped the 28-year-old on June 10 for a driving violation found cocaine on her and in the car. Prosecutors said tests have shown that the substance found in the car's glovebox and in Mathers' purse was cocaine. Neither Mathers nor her lawyer commented after Tuesday's hearing. Mathers was charged with possession of cocaine in July 2001 but not convicted. --Associated Press-- Poets Praises Eminem - Posted 02/07/03 LONDON - Seamus Heaney, the Nobel Prize-winning poet, praised American rap star Eminem on Monday, calling him as influential in popular culture as Bob Dylan and John Lennon had been in their heydays. Heaney, 64, was speaking before the start of the Prince of Wales' Educational Summer School in Norwich, where he was a guest. He was asked by journalists in the eastern English city whether there was a figure in popular culture who aroused interest in poetry and lyrics in the way that Bob Dylan and John Lennon did during the 1960s and 70s. Heaney, a former professor of poetry at Oxford University, said: "There is this guy Eminem." "He has created a sense of what is possible." "He has sent a voltage around a generation." "He has done this not just through his subversive attitude but also his verbal energy." Heaney is considered Ireland's greatest living poet and his many anthologies include "North" (1975) and "Field Work" (1979), which explored the horrors of Northern Ireland sectarianism. Since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, he has continued to alternate writing with teaching as a guest lecturer at several universities, particularly Harvard. - Associated Press Eminem Does Jacko and disses Mariah - Posted: 01/07/03 The people-displeasin' rapper, who has provoked Mariah Carey, dissed Christina Aguilera and denied "Weird Al" Yankovic, spoofed Jacko Tuesday in Scotland, dangling a fake baby from a hotel window. Any resemblance between Eminem's antics and Jacko's scandalous ones in Berlin last November (in which a real baby was the dangled object) was purely intentional. "It's an obvious joke," a spokesperson for the hip-hopster told E! News Live on Wednesday. "It's obvious what he's poking fun at. He has people outside hotels wherever he goes, and he was just having some fun." Upping the fun quotient: Eminem, wearing a Jacko-esque surgical mask, didn't just dangle his dolly at the ArtHouse Hotel in Glasgow, he tossed the thing up in the air. Showing concern for the action figure, Mr. Mathers caught the blond-haired babe before it could fall to the unforgiving pavement--one story below. Then he raised his fist and doffed his disguise. For the record, Jackson was wearing his trademark red shirt but not his trademark surgical mask, when he appeared at the window of his hotel room last fall and held out blanket-covered son Prince Michael II, aka Blanket, to his cheering fans four stories below. Although Jacko took heat from media pundits over his dubious display of parenting tactics, the Pop Oddity insisted his child was never at risk and that he merely wanted to show off lil Blanket's "spirit." Eminem appears to have just been showing off his snarky spirit. The 8 Mile star currently is many miles away from his Stateside home, on the road in the United Kingdom with his Anger Management Tour. He endeared himself to fans in a U.K. show Monday night, taking off a necklace and handing it to a fan in the front row. The British tabs said Eminem announced the piece was worth $450,000. The rapper's rep said it wasn't worth that much and that the tabs invented the six-figure figure. (The rep also noted the necklace wasn't exactly a Cracker Jack throwaway, either.) Jackson's camp, meanwhile, declined to comment Wednesday on the Oscar-winning rapper's satirical skills. Eminem, who previously has ripped the likes of Aguilera in song, is fresh off tiffs with Carey and Yankovic. Last month, Carey accused the Slim Shady one of acting "a little bit girly" for reportedly threatening to go public with phone messages she left on his machine. (Eminem, who has claimed the two briefly dated, denied he intended to sample the songbird's words.) As for Yankovic, the musical funnyman expressed disappointment that Eminem blocked him from filming a music video for his latest opus, "Couch Potato," a reworked version of the 8 Mile hit, "Lose Yourself." Eminem's rep said, at the time, that the rapper didn't mind "Weird Al" messing with the song's lyrics, but that he wanted to preserve its image. UPDATE! In the lawsuit, filed in December 2001, Bailey maintains that Eminem defamed him in "Brain Damage," a song from Eminem's The Slim Shady LP, and thus damaged his career as an aspiring rapper. In the song Eminem depicts Bailey as a junior high school bully. Meanwhile, Eminem may be able to use a lawsuit filed against the local school board in 1982 by his mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, to vindicate himself. Mathers-Briggs's lawsuit alleged that Bailey "assaulted and battered" Eminem when the two were attending Dort Elementary School. The lawsuit also asserted that as a result of the beatings, Eminem suffered sleeplessness, vomiting, nightmares, and anti-social behavior. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed on the grounds of governmental immunity. Eminem Settles Bullying Lawsuit - Posted: 01/06/03 Rapper Eminem and the bully who tormented him at school have settled out of court. DeAngelo Bailey, 30, who launched the 600,000 defamation lawsuit, and the superstar were to have appeared in court yesterday. But sources revealed the two had quietly settled their ancient differences. Eminem had said Bailey shoved him in lockers and broke his nose on a urinal. Bailey is even mentioned in the song, Brain Damage. The track appeared on his second album, The Slim Shady LP which rocketed the rapper to the top of the charts. In the song, Bailey, now a Detroit binman, is described as a "fat kid" who terrorised Eminem daily. But his nephew, Anthony Franva said: "DeAngelo told us he and Em' settled and he had a big smile on his face like he'd won the lottery. "He feels he has some peace of mind. Because of the song, DeAngelo couldn't get his own rap career started. He'd tell people his name and they'd just laugh at him. they knew he was the guy in the Slim Shady song. He's a very good rapper in his own right and deserves success." But Eminem's lawyers said the portrayal of Bailey as a bullying monster was correct. The singer's mother even sued the school district in Roseville, Michigan for failing to protect her son from Bailey and other young yobs. the case was dismissed. UPDATE! Eminem & Nas Honoured - gary on Wednesday, April 30 2003 A staggering 13,000 people turned up to Detroit, Michigan this weekend to witness the city's Hip Hop Summit. The crowds flocked to see Eminem and Nas who were on a panel discussing hip hop, alongside Rev Run from Run DMC, Obie Trice, Russell Simmons and the Mayor of Detroit. Eminem was honoured at the summit with an Outstanding Achievement Award for his charitable work and urged the crowd to vote in local elections. Nas's was honoured with the Heroes Award in recognition of his socially conscious single and video "I Can." Eminem acknowledged that part of the reason he was participating was to help showcase rap talent in his hometown. "I want people to realize there's a lot of talent in Detroit that's not been discovered yet. There's probably 10,000 me's in Detroit... What I'm trying to do is bring the industries here, bring the record labels here and make them realize there's talent in Detroit, and to start looking at it." Eminem added that he hoped to create some hip-hop and music industry oriented businesses in Detroit, though probably "not until I get a little older and start falling back from the music." Dr. Dre And Eminem Hit With Copyright-Infringement Lawsuit - gary on Friday, April 11 2003 Dr. Dre, Eminem, Interscope Records, and Universal Music And Video Distribution were hit with an amended copyright-infringement lawsuit in Los Angeles District Court last week by Minder Music Ltd., a London-based music publisher. Minder alleges that Dr. Dre's "Let's Get High" featuring Kurupt, Hittman, and Ms. Roq--which was co-written by Eminem--illegally used segments of the 1980 tune "Backstrokin'." Minder, which initially filed suit in July of 2000, is seeking $3.5 million in damages. Dr. Dre's attorney, Howard King, told Billboard that the music in question is a very common bass riff, and that Minder was seeking a ridiculous amount of money. "Let's Get High" was included on Dr. Dre's last album, 1999's Dr. Dre 2001, which has sold more than 6 million copies since its release. Eminem NEW Album!
