What about the mill villages?
My great grandfather White lived in a mill village when he was young, however he doesn't remember much of it.  He had relatives, however, that he visited in the mill houses.  He remembers that the houses were well built, but lacking commodoties. (Indoor plumbing, for example.)  The mill villages were "rented" by mill emloyees.  A portion of their paycheck each week would be withdrawn to pay the rent. After WWII, or when the mill closed, the houses were sold.

Often times an extended community build around Mill Villages. (
Blue Mountain Mill, Anniston)  These communities would often times have their own church, school, and even baseball team. My great great grandfather White played for the Avondale Mills baseball team in Sylacauga.
