Back When I Was a Hero by Dori Bushee

Time has a way of putting all of us in our places, making us face the reality of who we are, and of showing us what importance we share in the lives of those around us.

When our little ones first come into this world we nurture both their bodies and their minds, in hopes that one day they will grow into confident, loving people that will make a difference in this world.

At some point along the journey from infancy to young adulthood we become our children's heroes, and for that short time span we are everything to them, and the bond that is created is such a very beautiful thing.

There will be no other time throughout our lifetime that will hold so much meaning, bringing us the warmest of memories to keep us company in those lonelier times down the road.

As I watch my son, who is now a young adult and about to head off into the world on his own, I am so painfully aware now how fast time goes by, and I wish for those moments of being a hero once more.

I want him to still need to hold my hand to cross the street, and need me to help him get dressed, and make him his meals, and to play games while teaching him some new skill all at the same time.

I need to see his sparkling eyes beaming up at me and hear him giggling when I read him a story, or to watch his expressions as he watches his favorite cartoon on the television.

I want him to still be small enough to need to be put in a shopping cart when we do the weekly grocery shopping, and be excited when I hand him a box of Animal Crackers for the ride home.

I want to still tuck him in at night after giving him his bath, get my "goodnight kiss", and then watch him peacefully sleeping later on when I come back to check on him.

Sadly time does not stand still, and this hero has long since faded into the parent that had to tell him to clean his room, do his homework, and to drive carefully while he's out looking for his first job.

I have my photographs and I have my memories, and my son has turned into a very responsible and likable young man, but now it seems the tables have turned...and this time he has become my hero instead!
