My Journey

My Journey
How "Emerging Courageous online Magazine came into being"
Marilyn Dixon Pfanstiel, Editor

Eight years ago, chronic back pain which I had silently endured, became unbearable.  After extensive medical tests, my physician recommended therapeutic massage and yoga including meditation for relaxation of muscle tension.
While receiving massage therapy, I began releasing emotions stored in the muscles.  I had difficulty performing many of the yoga postures (from trying too hard) but the meditations and visualizations slowly taught me to focus on something other than the pain.
Because I received such marvelous benefits from massage therapy, I decided to go to another state and learn massage.  It was an exhilarating experience to begin a new endeavor at age 53.  Immediately upon returning home, I began sharing what I had learned.
I began working through the pain with psychotherapy.  I went deep within and learned what my needs and wants were.  I was having insomnia and attended a sleep disorders clinic and there learned about healing therapy.  As I began receiving energy work (Healing Therapy, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki), I began to go within and relax.  I expanded my Massage Therapy practice to include Healing Therapy.
When a "Gentle Adventure Retreat for Women " was offered in Maui, I realized I was ready for a wider experience.  The goal was to "emerge courageous" from the experience.  As my physical limitations were taxed and surpassed, I felt empowered by the experience and wanted to share it with others.
After returning home, fellow massage therapists and clients began sharing their stories of courage and strength as I began sharing mine. I found them fascinating, encouraging and strengthening.  I realized that many people need to tell someone their stories.  So I began looking for magazines on courage with no results.
Being a novice to the computer world, I though a web site was a wonderful place to share stories with others. I pulled up keyword: courage and began to surf the over 8000 entries and got inspired. There were many heroes among us. These stories need to be shared and I felt empowered to provide a way for them to be heard. Thus "Emerging Courageous online Magazine" was born.
When the catastrophe struck our nation on Sept. 11, 2001, I felt it even more imperative that there be an opportunity for people to share stories of courage, bravery and faith to aid in their healing and in the healing of our nation.  www.emergingcourageous.com is an avenue for these stories to be shared. This is my journey, what is yours?
