Compassion and Care at Christmastime

Amid the whirlwind of confusion and white coats, I passed through the emergency room doors and was led in to see my friend. The hospital had contacted me and asked if I could pick up my friend there because she was in no emotional state to drive her car home. Her mother had just had a heart attack and the personnel was quickly accessing her situation and administering the much needed care.

Bits and pieces of words floated out to me of snatches of conversations stating that the mother was to be transported by Care Flite to Plano hospital close by.

"You can sit on the bed nearby, if you want," Becky, the ER nurse stated with a smile on her pretty face. Her intense eyes focused on the job at hand but her warm smile made everyone in the stressful situation more at ease. Within the small confines of the ER room, I briefly chatted with her and my friend as we watched all the activity.

As the rescuing Calvary marching in, the men in their navy blue overalls and caps arrived soon thereafter from Care Flite to change out the monitors and record the vital statistics. Moving in next to the patient, a muscular-built man with a trim beard, began to examine her. It seemed as if his form had filled the small confines of the room. He looked like he had the ability to lift and carry her by himself to the helicopter! Those muscular arms instead reached out carefully to affix the tubes and instruments needed for the transport. I sat transfixed nearby seeing the dichotomy of the situation: how such a muscular, huge man could show such care and patience.

Care Flite personnel moved my friend's mother to their "surf board" and strapped her down. They carefully wrapped her in several light blankets for the transport. I left to go get the vehicle in order to pick up my friend where they had the helicopter. I watched as they allowed my friend to walk along next to her mother as they wheeled her out by stretcher. After they loaded her mother into the aircraft, the muscular man turned around, and in a moment of consideration and compassion, he reached out his arm to my friend motioning for her to come say goodbye to her.

Blades rotating, the helicopter flew off into the night sky filled with stars. Those twinkling lights overhead surrounded the flashing lights of the helicopter as they lifted off into the December night sky. We left shortly afterward in order to meet them at the nearby hospital.

I applaud the ER staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Allen, especially Becky. I watched as she put her arm around the waist of my friend waiting as the helicopter was preparing to leave. Also, I am impressed with the Care Flite personnel, especially the muscular employee, for taking the extra time to reach out his arm of compassion to my friend in such a loving fashion.

At times we live in a cold,uncaring world. Emergency, medical personnel have a tough job and usually a thankless job. I want to shine the 'spotlight' on these marvelous individuals who faithfully serve their community. Many become hardened to the plight of their patients but on this night, a few days before Christmas, I was reminded that a loving touch or caring word revives for a moment, a troubled, anxious heart with the warmth of the true meaning of the season. Compassion and care was demonstrated through these workers of our community through Presbyterian Hospital and Care Flite staff. I am thankful and grateful for the exceptional attention and care provided to our community by those individuals in time of trauma.

During this special experience, I'm again reminded of our Heavenly Father's care for us. Even though He is Magestic and all Powerful, His tenderness and mercy is everlasting. It amazes that the Creator of all has Hands and Arms that are so compassionate to reach out to a hurting world..
