                        Addictions by Barbie Ann Conrad

Addictions are all consuming, all reality to deny,
Pretending to live and function, a lie within a lie.

This thing permeating the brain, is all intrusive,
First thing, has to be tended to, it is pervasive.

If you think you can’t get it, your world falls apart,
Anyone advising you against it, friendship will depart.

Afflicted have no room for care, lacking conviction,
Everyone around you, touched by invasive affliction.

Existing in the shallow waters of family and friends,
Diving deeper would drown you, addiction defends.

Whatever is lacking in your life, shift all the blame,
To anything or anyone, yourself never to defame.

The addicted, dualistic, become two way people,
Blinded by their driven need, digging a deep hole.

In greater moments of remission, you pledge to stop,
In the back of your mind, this, you won’t want to drop.

Thinking you are in control, is the first self lie,
The need is greater, reality on hold, you sigh.

Sacrifice family, friends, career on the altar of pseudo-God,
Ignoring all commitments, your addiction, you applaud.

You build your life, to fit your addiction, living life to die,
After a while, you don’t see the difference, lie within a lie.

As long as you can pretend to feel, creating a fantasy,
Always seeking someone new, to fit your dynasty.
