Life's Expectations by Dee Ann E. L. Horvath

When I was young, life was so cut and dry.
I had all the answers to everything.
There was no gray, only black and white.
All decisions were clear cut and right.

As I look back now I remember a night.
A hot summer evening and the stars were so bright.
I was seventeen wondering where I would be
At ten, twenty, thirty, years from that night.

All the dreams I had and all the ways I would manage
Any obstacle that dared to cause me any damage.
I vowed to never become like them
And was terribly afraid I would in the end.

The years have gone by and now I recall
That I am not different from them at all.
I have learned there are no easy answers.
It all comes down to weighing your choices.

The stakes are higher and so are the losses.
I find that I am dispensable for the ones I love.
So like all the others before me I have relinquished
My original life's expectations for a simpler plan.

The journey is really not all that bad.
I didn't loose myself but found myself in others.
With growth comes change and it is not all that sad
To be a wife, friend, lover and a mother.

As the choices become more complex
My expectations become less and less.
My end resolve is for happiness
For me and all before and after me.

My children are beginning to start their own journeys.
They don't see or understand my compromises yet.
I just want to be blessed and be able to view
Their rite of passage through life's expectations.
