A Story of Christmas Fate by Dori Bushee
She saw him by accident
sitting alongside of the road,
and she wondered to herself
just how heavy was his load?
She offered him a ride
and then a bite to eat,
then soon they found a Diner
and began looking for a seat.
They shared little conversation
but were glad they now were warm,
then they got back into the car
hoping to beat the coming storm.
When she turned the radio on
Christmas carols began to play,
and her passenger joined in
while they sang along the way.
It was good to have someone
and not be driving all alone,
so she was glad she picked him up
yet wondered where he called home.
So many miles melted away
like snowflakes on the windshield,
and they both lost track of time
when they saw the sign to yield.
Thinking it was safe to go
she then cautiously drove on,
neither of them ever realizing
the road was somehow gone.
They got caught up in a skid
and went spinning out of sight,
somewhere into a snowdrift
on a cold crisp Christmas night.
She never made it home
but her soul was finally free,
and by the hand of fate
the blind man again could see.
Now two wooden crosses
mark their journey's end,
two strangers heading home
who each became a friend.
